I am having a very strange problem right now. I have an extra harddrive mounted as /home. Right now it is pretty full. It has been pretty full for a long time now and I stopped paying attention to it, don't know if it was 70%, 80% or more.

Today I got the message: no file space available at /home. I went ahead and deleted many unnecessary files, like iso images of old distributions, an outdated Trisquel iso, some other videos that I have backed up on DVD, etc. The strange thing is, I now have still 0 KB space available.

In fact I could watch the space shrink from several GB to absolute 0 in a matter of 20-30 seconds in the system monitor, right after deleting some files! Can someone give me a hint what this could mean? I have no idea whatsoever.

Edit: Forgot to tell, according to the system monitor Free space is 6.9 GB, Available space is still 0 KB. Filesystem in use is ext4.

You should search for large files and check for hidden files as well. Once I had a large hidden file which took up a few GBs so I deleted it. The name of the file was .xsession-errors.

That was what I did, deleted many large useless files. Several GB of large useless files. The system monitor showed 6.9 GB available space, which shrinked before my eyes to 0 bytes.

@teodorescup scanned /home with baobab, usage of my username folder is 100%, where the folder Music takes up 58.9% and the rest is only in two cases higher than 10%. Inside the Music folder I noticed some weirdness. Stuff is organized like this:

Artist/Album/song.flac

In one case the Album folder has a 100% usage, even though there is just a 12 KB thumbnail inside, the actual music is deleted atm.

P.S.: now that I restarted the machine everything is well again. I see 57.3 GB of free space and 50.4 GB are available. Is it possible, that the harddrive is fragmented badly? I used it for over a year and written/deleted stuff pretty often.

Run "baobab" and scan /home .
