(I think this is too long to go on the Trisquel 9 Issues page, so I'm putting a link from there to here. Also, I will probably always tag the wrong component or even project out of ignorance.)

Within the default panel, launcher icons and the main menu icon can be moved to the right side of the window list, but how to move icons back to the left side took me a long time to figure out. Resetting all panels works but seems excessive as it also voids all other, desired customization; "reset panel" as well as panel "properties" are hard to find in the first place unless the panel has ample empty space.

Steps to reproduce:

1: Open the context menu for an icon in the left area of a panel, for example the Caja icon.
2: Untick "Lock To Panel". Now there are two methods for moving: A and B. Neither works as desired.

Method A
A3: Open the context menu for the same icon again.
A4: Select "Move".
A5: Use a mouse (no click necessary) to slowly move the icon rightwards. As soon as it has crossed the border between the left area (i.e. the area that by default contains the 3 icons [for main menu, Caja, and Abrowser]) and the window list (where tiles for any windows would be), you can not move it back to the left area; moving the icon leftwards will only squish the central area.
A6: Click to drop/anchor.
A7: Open the context menu for the same icon again.
A8: Select "Move".
A9: Try to move the icon to the left area. You can't; moving will only squish the central area.

Method B
This method can only move launcher icons, not the main menu icon.
B3: After unlocking the icon, left-click the icon, hold the click, drag the icon rightwards, across the window list's left border.
B4: Release to drop/anchor.
B5: Try to drag it back, leftwards, across the window list's left border. What happens depends on where you release the click. If there were any empty area, the icon would just get anchored there, but there is no empty space, as all space will be sensitive to trigger the nearest icon. Dropping near the Abrowser or Caja icon will result in that program attempting to open the launcher. To succeed, you must drop it left of the main menu icon (such as on the panel's left edge, unless there are hide buttons), but this only works if the main menu icon is still in the left are; once the main menu icon has been moved to the right of the window list, abandon all hope, resort to resetting.

(I think I had found a third bug about repairing panel layout after accidentally setting application font size and/or panel size very high and back to normal, but haven't figured out how to reproduce the broken layout where icons failed to snuggle back together; at any rate, the "reset" wrecking ball worked.)

Did you unlock the window list too?

No, I didn't. It never occured to me that doing so might help. I see unlocking the window list lets me move the other icon back across it. Thanks.

The reason is that, while the window list is locked, it refuses to give
up its position to other panel items.
