What about cameras?

What kind of software is it in cameras? Are there companies selling free cameras?

You can buy a camera supported by CHDK or Magic Lantern which are free firmwares add-ons for Canon cameras.

You can find a list of CHDK supported cameras (including supported firmware versions) in the news section:

http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/News

You can find a list of cameras supported by Magic Lantern on the project's main page:

Seems like the Magic Lantern is "just" add-on though and doesn't replace the whole shabang.

Elphel and Apertus are "open hardware" companies working on camera technology:

Elphel website seems to be down right now, but May 1 snapshot suggests the project is still active?
