Hi there! I am a brand-new Trisquel user, and I haven't been able to find much help in the documents that come with the system. I downloaded Trisquel 5.0, and I cannot connect to the internet. I tried right-clicking on the icon with the two computers and the "x," but I can't find anyway from there to connect to my wireless network. I am also unable to find "network settings" on my computer, per the instructions in the manual.

Do you think someone here could give me a rundown on how to simply connect to the internet?

It is unfortunately possible that your wireless card may require non-free firmware in order to work. Should that be the case, it wouldn't work with Trisquel which is based on the Linux-libre kernel.

Could you please run the 'lspci' command in a terminal and post the result here so that we can understand which wireless card you're using?

As oysterboy said. I try and keep an eye on these forums.

For USB chipsets RTL8187B, RTL8187L, and AR9170 are supported by Trisquel.
All Atheros N Mini PCI and Mini PCIe chipsets are supported as well.

I am unable to do so at the moment, but I've seen what you're talking about. I'm not able to copy-paste anything, you see, since I'm not dual booting or anything; I've only got Trisquel. (I suppose I could type the whole thing, but isn't that information kind of ... well, isn't there a boat-load of it? That seems like it'd take some time...) I'm not dual-booting Windows, you see... I'm using a separate computer.

Narrow down on the few lines that are about the wireless card. You'll have to type them here, but there won't be much to type, don't worry :). Or you could copy/paste the whole output to a text file on a flash drive and then retrieve the content on your machine that's connected to this forum :).

I won't be able to do that for a while, but thank you. :) As for what we might find, let's say my card doesn't work with Trisquel. I have a Toshiba Satellite, if that helps. What would the next step be?

Purchase a freedom-compatible card, or a USB dongle. You can find such things on thinkpenguin.com for instance (the owner - Chris - is a regular on this board, just ask him), on eBay (if you know exactly what to look for), other places as well I guess...

Thanks! I'll look into that.

What you really need is a number that looks something like this [1324:5678]. That's the code for vendor:product.

lspci -nn|grep -i netw
