Can't Connect to VPN?

I successfully configured the VPN options and imported the configuration files but when I try to connect from the GUI it says "connection failed because of invalid VPN secrets" I've searched for a solution for this but haven't really come up with much that's helpful.

I think it's because I don't have root access.

In the terminal if I try the connection without giving myself root access "openvpn" fails.

But if I try it after giving myself root access I can connect from the command line with:

openvpn --config filename

Just not sure how to make this work with the GUI VPN tool...any thoughts?

What gui tool is that? Have you tried running it with gksudo?

In the bottom right corner of the screen on the taskbar there's a network monitor icon with two small monitor screens as an icon. Left clicking on it brings up a menu that includes VPN connections. I used the configure VPN option from it to import the configuration files for the various servers my VPN offers.

They imported successfully and I entered my network access id and password to the configurations. When I try to activate one, the spinning yellow circle appears in the right lower corner but it never can connect.

EDIT: I opened a terminal window and gave myself SU rights and it seems to have started working even when launched from the GUI. I will reboot and see if it will work on a clean restart where I haven't messed with the command line.

Sometimes I have the same problem.

I solved by changing connection or rebooting.

Try to change your vpn connection or reboot the existing one. IPVanish is very reliable vpn connection for me.
