Just noticed that https://tube.cadence.moe/settings now lists more than 20 instances, hosted in various regions and by reliable community service providers.

The original thread has reached eol last month: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/cloudtube-invidious-alternative.

All the channels I follow have been posting their videos to LBRY for awhile now, so I just watch them on odysee.com. I'm running out of reasons to get stuff from youtube or invidious or cadence anymore.

However, that is great news that cadence is growing more and more established and decentralized.

DT (DistroTube) is on LBRY. I wasn't aware. Thanks.

Yes Distrotube and mental outlaw and a bunch of the other Linux tiling manager channels I follow are all fully on LBRY now. Other than locating a random song or two or a DIY video for fixing something around the house I won't be needing much of YouTube's content going forward. And a lot of those songs and DIY videos are getting posted to LBRY as well.

Surely, dropping the monopolies altogether is even more desirable than using them anonymously.

LBRY seems to be going in the right direction. There was also PeerTube, although I realize I have taken to reading or listening instead of watching videos. I guess this is a matter of personal preferences, but I find it easier to focus without the distraction of the moving picture.

CloudTube is still a handy resource to access content referenced on yt.

Same here!

And thank you all for mentioning LBRY - I didn't know about it before.

It's based on blockchain. The hype that usually accompanies crypto might give it bigger popularity boost than PeerTube could ever dream of. However, there are pitfalls. We have to wait some more time to see how robust their protocol turns out to be. Has any of you looked into their blockchain? Can any1 confirm the protocol doesn't have any obvious flaws?

As to CloudTube - I guess its success is beneficial for people like us. I don't however see how a typical John Smith could be convinced to stop accessing YouTube directly and use it instead. LBRY, on the other hand, seems to be giving quite a bit of incentive to use.

Coud not find a CloudTube instance that is not currently blocked. Google likely killing dependence on their own services, aka shooting themselves in the foot?

I am not getting the same error message from all instances, nor for all videos, though, so maybe the problem is elsewhere.

I usually just use yewtu.be if I need to look up a youtube video these days. It's almost always working. It's an invidious instance, but maybe it has some cloudtube bits to it as well, I don't know.

Ah thanks, the problem seems indeed to come from the interface at https://tube.cadence.moe.

I was able to access that prophetic video about Ethereum on yewtu.be.

For awhile I was avoiding yewtu.be because it sounded like "jewtu.be" and I didn't want to be contributing to something that was anti-Jew or something. But then I realized I was just being silly and it was just a different spelling for youtube.

I'm really going to look awful if it turns out the people behind yewtu.be are a bunch of card-carrying Hitler youth or something.

Oh my - what a soothing company.

I too was initially a bit shy of yewtu.be, because you never know what abominable snowman might spring out of that box.

By the way, this instance is currently not working: https://invidious.tinfoil-hat.net.

It works, you just have to form a tinfoil antenna on top of your tinfoil hat in order to receive their transmission. Generally about 24 inches of antenna for every thousand feet above sea level you are. So if you live at 15,000 feet high in the Himalayas in Nepal, you have to have a 30 foot tinfoil antenna on top of your head, which is a bit awkward when walking through doorways and under most bridges.

I see. That could explain the pointy shape of the stupas.

This one instance seems a wee bit outdated: https://invidious.reallyancient.tech

Yes like this ice stupa in Ladekh - https://yewtu.be/watch?v=kptgonELj00

The BBC thinks it was built to supply water to a village, but inside it's all tinfoil. The villagers are just trying to get more than a half-bar of reception on their cell phones.

One thing I've found recently is a little utility called ytfzf which allows me to search for videos from the command line and use youtuve-dl to play them in mpv with the touch of a button. It's a much better search function than ytsearch in my experience. It's here if anyone is interested: https://github.com/pystardust/ytfzf
