"Debian GNU/Hurd 2023 released!

It is with huge pleasure that the Debian GNU/Hurd team announces the release of Debian GNU/Hurd 2025.

This is a snapshot of Debian "sid" at the time of the stable Debian "Trixie" release (Auguest 2025), so it is mostly based on the same sources. It is not an official Debian release, but it is an official Debian GNU/Hurd port release.

Before posting questions on various webnews, please read the FAQ which will answer most if not all of them.

For release details, please read the announcement email.

The GNU Hurd is the GNU project's replacement for the Unix kernel. It is a collection of servers that run on the Mach microkernel to implement file systems, network protocols, file access control, and other features that are implemented by the Unix kernel or similar kernels (such as Linux). More detailed.

GNU Mach is the microkernel upon which a GNU Hurd system is based. It provides an Inter Process Communication (IPC) mechanism that the Hurd uses to define interfaces for implementing in a distributed multi-server fashion the services a traditional operating system kernel provides. More detailed."

"The mission of the Hurd project is: to create a general-purpose kernel suitable for the GNU operating system, which is viable for everyday use, and gives users and programs as much control over their computing environment as possible."

this is like the most important news on planet earth or something... I am speechless

So note to self, don't run the new gnu-hurd images on usb 3.0 ports with usb 3.0 I just caused this crazy bug cause I was excited and wanted to boot it up, now my external hard disk drive shows up on trisquel as a second hard disk drive by it's weird cryptographic name like this /media/user/08a3c36e-208b-47b9-b112-59a4b851a099/ in thunar underneath it's normal name "1 TB Volume"

edit 1

I got gnuhurd to boot, and got to the grub menu, then the start up crashed immediately, and my computer restarted, then the drive wasn't recognized in the boot menu... now I'm trying it with usb 2.0 on an older computer :D oops

edit 2

Well I tried again, and the next oldest working computer I have is sitting in a box under my bed, which was taken out of the desktop case I refitted with an entire gaming computer build years ago... I think it's old enough to work... it might actually be like a windows xp motherboard, so now I have to get to work rebuilding my pc :D

This is literally the coolest news on the planet right now...

If gnu/hurd replaces linux as the kernel, then we have to call gnu/linux

gnugnu ... gnugnu is a catchy name, you can't have a slash in your name,

gnu, slash, linux, is not catchy, gnugnu, is at least catchy
