Deleting icoons on desktop

Is there a way to deleted the icoons on the desktop,I search for desktop preference but didn't find a way the deleted the icoons.

You will find the settings in gconf-editor. If you don't know how to run
it press Alt+F2, write "gconf-editor" and hit the Run button. You will find
check-boxes for *_icon_visible under apps, nautilus, desktop.

Basically follow these directions (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/add-the-trash-can-icon-to-your-ubuntu-desktop/) but on the last step uncheck the boxes instead of checking them.

Thanks@SirGrant the info given on howtogeek was the other way around :) "adding instead of deleting"...but however useful
