Does Trisquel offer a backports repository like Debian or Ubuntu have?

Yes, Trisquel does have backports. Here is a an example of what sources.list looks like:

deb https://mirrors.ocf.berkeley.edu/trisquel/ etiona-backports main
deb-src https://mirrors.ocf.berkeley.edu/trisquel/ etiona-backports main

I recommend you only download the required backported packages you want, otherwise, expect a mess...

Aka, you will have to reinstall...

Unless you do it in a vm first.

Edit: And also test to see what happens too of course.

I have enabled Trisquel's backports on several systems in the past and have never faced any issue. Have you?
