Hello, and thank you for your assistance!

I'm trying to get my friend started with free software and have had one hell of a time getting Trisquel to boot on an older Macbook Pro 2,2 running OSX 10.6.8.

rEFInd is installed and working properly, as far as I can tell. I have the Trisquel 7.0 i686 iso burned to a DVD. When the Macbook boots, rEFInd comes up but the disc is not recognized. Scanning for bootable optical discs (by pressing ESC) does not fix the problem.

I am willing to do whatever is takes to get Trisquel installed on this computer! Any guidance is greatly appreciated. I am a novice but eager to help my friend on the path towards liberation. I've been unable to find any documentation anywhere that explains what the problem might be.

In fact, Ruben, who maintains Trisquel, was trying to help us during the FSF's 30 birthday celebration, but we weren't able to resolve the issue!

Please help!

Thank you!

It doesn't sound like rEFInd is working properly. Can't you just hold the alt key while powering on to select the Trisquel installer? (It should be incorrectly labelled as Windows.) I know that GRUB works well with many different macbook models.

Unfortunately, holding down alt/option while powering on only displays the hard disk with Mac OS. Interestingly, when the same iso is on a bootable USB, rEFInd finds it, but because of the BS firmware, it refuses to boot.

Does the disk work in another machine?

Embarassing. It turns out the disc I was using was corrupted during the burning process. I'm happy to announce I'm writing this with the freshly installed Trisquel 7.0.

Glad to hear that! ;)
