Very nice news. If there was ever a perfect example of why software should be free, it's the VW emissions scandal.

This is definitely a step in the right direction. I agree with the EFF though that's its ridiculous that the onus is on us, the users, to defend these exemptions every 3 years, instead of the people demanding the restrictions having to defend them.

Yes. This is a good thing but it will only last for 3 years and there's no guarantee of getting the exemption again next time. Exemptions aren't enough. To establish lasting protection for our rights it's high time the DMCA be limited in scope so as to afford the public with the rights we deserve.
