Is it possible to encrypt the whole hard disk at install time (as with Debian/ Ubuntu "alternate cd")?

Not by now, but we are working in a netisnt cd that will do that. You
can encrypt your home partition easily (it would also be more
efficient), there are plenty of howtos about that in the net.

Thanks :-), then I'll wait until you have that netist cd. I regard encryption of the whole disk as much safer - personal data also gets loaded into swap, /tmp and some parts of /var, and I haven't *felt* any serious performance penalties by now (I've been using disk encryption for a few months).
