They thought RMS was somebody else or didn't bother to check.

“TLA Old Nerd” for another “TLA Old Nerd”

"I’m so sorry. I did conflate them. I guess I assumed there were not two creepy guys talking about free and open software."

Anyone with a fraction of a functioning mind would know instantly that that was not RMS. But these two brainless reptiles (the passer-on-of-information and the poster) allowed this to sit for 10 years as a blot on RMS's reputation. How disgusting.

I wouldn't trust their "new" insight that it was ESR either. People who are this excited to wrongfully defame others shouldn't be trusted at all.

Indeed. Of all the people who worked for VA Linux, have been married and had extra-marital affairs, why would ESR be the main suspect?

I am anonymous and stupid, so I'd probably choose to have extra-marital affairs at my workplace. If I was famous and clever, most probably I'd choose different.

Too bad you aren't famous enough for "technology bloggers" to wrongfully accuse you of sexual harrassment.

This blogger guy was friends with Aaron Swartz, a famous hacker who famously killed himself after the American Department of Justice famously charged him with 13 federal crimes for downloading some scientific research articles without paying for them. This blogger-friend-of-Swartz should have known the kind of damage that accusations can have on a person. But he did it anyway. Because he's an Apple-loving reptile without a functioning mind. Rather shameful.

I'm not surprised. Reptiles have a well known tendency to entice people to get forbidden apples.

The punishment for such a misdemeanor is also well known.

Speaking of which, I am cooking the dinosaur's closest cousin for the evil American holiday called "Thanksgiving" today. Bonjour!

Ah so that would explain why they went extinct. And now you've fallen back on their cousins.

But what shall you be eating in a month, then? You still have a couple of frozen octopi, I guess, or the frozen blob from last year.

Aaron also used macOS and several pieces of proprietary software, so I'm not sure DaringFireball's love of Apple is very relevant.

https://usesthis.com/interviews/aaron.swartz/

Though yes, Stallman having an extra-marital affair is so obviously false to anyone who knows anything about Stallman that he ought to reconsider his practice about writing about people he knows nothing about simply because it's fashionable to do so at the time.

As for it being Raymond it wouldn't surprise me but his and his source's track record of being able to know basic facts hasn't been reliable enough to take their claims seriously.

Not whether it's relevant or not - the laptop brand that someone loves is never terribly relevant. But it does sometimes give you some insight into their thought processes (or lack thereof). An Apple blogger is not someone I would go to for information on just about anything.

But overall I agree with everything you've said here. The lack of effort to even do a 1-minute Wikipedia search on the person's marital history is really a terribly poor look for the writer. And trying to cover it up by saying "OHHH sorry, I defamed the wrong three-letter programmer" really makes it even worse. Both RMS and ERS could now possibly bring a defamation lawsuit against him.

Defamation has clearly become standard practice.

I have a feeling it might now be more sensible to reward people who are not engaging in defamation, rather than wasting resources prosecuting those who are.

Me, typing: Bill Gates is the anti-christ.

Wait - that could be defamatory.

Me, typing: Bill Gates is the spawn of satan.

Good, that way I don't defame the anti-christ and get to keep my reward money. Just hope I'm not defaming the spawn of satan too much...

I wonder what aardvarks might think about this. After all, they've been conflated with Anubis, the jackal-headed God of the Dead. I hope they'll reward me aardvarkly for dissipating the confusion when time comes.

Of course, I also hope Anubis will remember that, when time comes.

The blogger is John Gruber, wikipedia describes him as someone who blogs about Apple products.

This is why you don't trust these kinds of proprietary software fanbois. Ever. Because they willingly and gleefully lie about anything and everything.

They just want to get credit for saying something that other proprietary software fanbois will think is "hip". They don't give a crap whether or not what they say is true.

I have developed some qualms about esr lately; they have nothing to do with "allegations" -- but his apparent support for far right causes and other contrary-to-my-beliefs political views regarding welfare, taxes, the state apparatus, wealth reallocation, militias and guns.

He's old.

What's your favorite Raymond quote?

"Sweden used to have high cohesion. Until they invited in a bunch of barbarians from the 7th century."

"Much as I’d like to see that ugly fascist Whitmer shot or hung"

http://esr.ibiblio.org/?p=8685#comment-2417199

"Incidentally, if anyone actually gets shot, I would prefer it be the white Communists rather ineffectually trying to use the blacks as pawns, rather than the blacks themselves – for whom teargas and rubber bullets ought to be sufficient chastisement."

http://esr.ibiblio.org/?p=8685#comment-2424116

"I will shoot any person engaging in arson or other life-threatening behavior, issuing a warning to cease first if safety permits...White rioters, on the other hand, will be presumed to be Antifa Communists attempting to manipulate this tragedy for Communist political ends; them I consider “enemies-general of all mankind, to be dealt with as wolves are” and will shoot immediately, without mercy or warning."

http://esr.ibiblio.org/?p=8708

"I do want to shoot the totalitarian scumbags that are trying to burn my country down...I can only maximize my expected number of Communist riot agitaters killed by not getting jailed or shot while I’m doing it."

http://esr.ibiblio.org/?p=8708#comment-2425551

"Ten thousand dead Communists from now might be a plausible time to build bridges with the remains of a shattered, humbled, and decimated left wing. Now isn’t."

"Pay attention to rates. Whites have a lower intercommunal murder rate per capita; volume is higher only because there are more whites. No prize for guessing the lower rate of violence is due to higher average IQ and lower average time preference, because duh!"

"They should all be shot, every single freaking one of them. Or go on one-way helicopter rides. I wouldn’t have said that a year ago, but they are now violent criminal insurrectionists and deserve to be treated accordingly."

Stallman and Raymond are rather incomparable. Stallman has never had bloodthirst with the possible exception of wanting to suicide bomb the Symbolics building (not employees) in the 80s. Having such bloodthirst towards a building over 30 years ago is regrettable, but ultimately far less harmful than Raymond's current fantasies.

Lol these allegations are obviously not about RMS. Woke people on social media will do anything to smear someone as sexist, racist, etc, facts be damned. Being in academia, I see this a lot nowadays. I'm glad the FSF brought him back, even if I don't agree with him on everything.

To be honest, I agree about RMS, but truthfully, both the far right, and the "centrist" left, are full of it.

Progressives are the solution, but corrupt officials, whether democrats, republicans, are both bad.

I know which I think has lost its way completely, aka the far right, but to be honest, one thing that is missing especially in the USA and the west, etc...

Is having integrity when in power, my point being, until the greedy corrupt officials are taken out of power, democrat or republican, matters very little unless they are progressive democrats of course...

I put quotes around centrist, because europe would consider usa's democrat party to be republicans.

Such a mess in usa...

If anyone here is wise, stay the hell out of USA, money matters way more than justice sadly...

The list goes on and on... but yeah, woke isn't the biggest problem, corruption from democrats, republicans whether corporate or government or both IS the issue.

I am a progressive myself; maybe you got the impression that I'm a right winger but I'm not. I support strong action on climate change, Medicare for all, ending wars, police/criminal justice reform, etc. I also vote (and have even campaigned) for progressive candidates when possible, though they usually never win. I think RMS supports most of these policies, while based on the things that I've read here ESR seems to be a fascist.

I just dislike these fringe elements of the left (largely on Twitter) that are always in a competition to find which group of people is the most oppressed, and cancelling people for something they might have said 15 years ago, rather than doing anything to unite people around actual policies that would help their lives. This excessive wokeness is far from the biggest problem that we face (which I would say is climate change), but it is a problem nonetheless.

That is fair, the left in the united states is weak...

The congressmen who tried to help trump overthrow the elections should be removed from power and jailed, why it hasn't happened is beyond me...

Also, the right wing and the left wing both participate in cancel culture, its so weird that the right wing claims to do anything else.

Either way, climate change, corruption, greed, boastfulness... which leads to thinking a country is the greatest in the world and leads to endless wars, etc... all this stuff is problematic.

I have brought this up, once with other people, but naruto shippuden is a good way to say, endless wars will eventually cause catastrophic events.

Obviously it will happen way different and with machines not people wielding insane amounts of power, etc...

My point being, hatred begets more hatred...

These clowns would do well to be forced to watch the whole thing to an extent, with a gag on them and be hooked up to a machine or w/e

IF only that could happen, maybe then they would understand they are creating their own enemies for the future.

That is the problem with endless wars, people who rage them are creating future enemies who will cause havoc on this world.

I am sure you understand this, I only wish our world leaders could grasp this simple concept.

That being said, these haters can go straight to hell if they are going to keep manipulating people to get their own way.

Hope is what we need right now and even more so, action!

One without the other is doomed to fail and we get more of the same.

edit: Typo congressmen not congressman... :P
