Hello, this topic is very interesting to me but I not know about freedom-respecting phone with Ubuntu Touch. Your idea to make Trisquel Phone is certainly interesting. The closer one to that is Replicant phones, Librem and PinePhone as far as I know. However, I believe it is not that easy to create a Trisquel Phone so the answer should be it needs a long time.

Sincerely yours,

As far as I know, there is no fully free phone. Others are better prepared to explain it. Besides ones listed above, here is one that has some freedom:

Actually, as much as I would like to be optimistic, I fear that it would be more likely to get the current leader of microsoft windows err, malwaresoft windows to open source half otheir operating system.

My point, it sounds very much impossible due to google's sneaky way of doing things.

And apple devices? forget about it...

Even Pinephone cannot fully do this due to the awful nature of the modem. :(

This is exactly the reason I think working on a free phone operating system, is probably doomed to fail. The main point of any cell phone requires use of 5G or 4G, etc...
Now on the other hand, if you can reverse engineer 5G years before it goes obsolete, that might be different. Of course, them corporate people will try and wreck it all over again.

That all being said, any device that doesn't have the equivelant of pluton or google/apple behind it, is very much worth reverse engineering.

I would like to be proven wrong, but even the problem of getting rid of the non-free wifi card and putting a libre one in, is currently as far as I know, not possible.

If this has changed recently though please tell me. This would be interesting to me.

the hardware situation is dire in terms of respect your freedom. However a big
part of it, is people's lack of ability to organize. How many free
software people are there? One million? If they could come together
and pay 10usd each every time an important hardware project
came up, there would be 10000000usd at disposal. Like many other groups of people, such
a degree of organization fails.

If they can get the schematics made, then lkcl has said it will
cost 20000000usd to start hardware fabrication. If no investors show
up, will a crowd funding provide the money? Likely not.

Jiao has said, he (working together with others) can make production
ready schematics for a 802.11g open source wifi card. Budget
about 500000usd. If you pay him more, same goes for a 802.11ac
open source wifi card. Has free software people provided him with
the money?
According to a professor located in europe who is researching
in 5g, I do not know how it is
in the non european part of the world, anyone who wants to, can
build an open source 5g modem. There are patents and
maybe copyrights ruling the matter. But those are subject to fair use
regulations. You cannot be denied access to make use of the patents and
copyrights and license fees are regulated. Have free software
people been able to come together and provide the funds, such that an
open source 5g modem can get made?
The following applies for the pinephone. I do not know about the
pinephone pro. According to postmarketos that software system
can make all devices on the pinephone run on free software. Except
the modem. Are free software people pouring money into
postmarketos? Or any other free software system for
the pinephone?
