Free Software alternative to OTG-Helper

Hello,

I am looking for a way to mount usb drives in my tablet. I have installed the AOSP 7.1.2 and can connect the usb drive with the proper adapter but the OS can't mount it, gives an "OTG error".
Apparently there are apps like "OTG-Helper" and "MountStick" that take care of that, but none are free. Does anyone have any knowledge of a Free alternative. F-Droid has no solution available.

Thanks.

Is there any option to transfer files using MTP on your tablet?

There should be a menu that pops up on the tablet once you connect it asking what you want to do with it (e.g. transfer files, only charge, etc.).

Yeah, that's the opposite direction: As I understand the question they're not asking about plugging the tablet into the computer but about plugging USB drives into the tablet.

Just realized that, haha.

Was trying to delete what I said, but there is no button to do that since this forum is connected to a mailing list, correct?

Yeah, I think you can only edit and not delete a comment.
BY the way, do you have any pertinent information as to a possible free software friendly way of doing what I need?

Thanks.

Exactly, I can access the tablet on my Trisquel 8 laptop perfectly. BUT when I connect a usb flash drive or usb hard drive to the tablet it doesn't work.
