Hi,

Is there a free software home security system or can you recommend how to piece one together? Perhaps a 1-4 cameras that can record to a local harddrive and automatically overwrite old files when it's something like 70% full. Or sonetbi g like one of those "smart" doorbells that video records or takes photos.

You will probably want to check out the Motion project (https://motion-project.github.io/).

It is GPL2 licensed, can run cameras and do motion detection, live streaming, detection logging, etc. It's definitely a DIY project, but there's lots of documentation on the website for setting it up. Hopefully you could run it and hook it up to some webcams or security cameras that don't need proprietary drivers.

I have been looking into using Haven in an old android device. Of course, it would be better if I could use a Replicant device.
Haven is not exactly a home security app, but it has some nice features (send alerts via text or Telegram, use all sensors in the device, uses Tor for accessing the logs, etc).

I am also glad to learn about Motion. It could be an option for lots of people.

If one wants to simply put a Wifi Security Camera, it's already possible for 40 bucks. But if one wants to do so in security and freedom, it's yet hard and expensive.
