FSF hands out Trisquel at a Microsoft store
Trisquel mentioned on Slashdot today:
http://news.slashdot.org/story/12/12/21/2212202/gnu-hands-out-trisquel-at-a-microsoft-store
Some of the comments dismissing Trisquel are sad because they show clearly that the person commenting has never tried Trisquel, but spreads misinformation nevertheless (e.g. 'you won't be able to listen to your mp3s').
I also read something about "not being able to play your DVDs". I haven't actually tried in Trisquel, but libdvdread4 seems to be installed by default. I recall Ubuntu leaving that package out of their distro by default. And a similar situation with Fedora.

Interestingly, I recall Fedora, a popular distro, can't play MP3s out of the box for patent reasons.
But what can you expect? It's Slashdot. :-)
I've played multiple dvd's on trisquel. No idea where that nonsense came from.
DVDs are perfectly fine. *Encrypted* DVDs don't work (and unfortunately many DVDs are encrypted) without a program that at least my government has censored (like DeCSS), but as far as I'm aware, Ubuntu has no ability to do any better in this department.
For people having a better government, I recall that libdvdcss can be easily obtained. Just fire this command in a terminal:
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
Out of the box neither play encrypted DVDs. Ubuntu's Software Center has a non-free application that can play commercial DVDs. It is the least of the problems facing Trisquel or GNU/Linux users in general at this point. Optical discs are dead.

You all realize this thread is mostly useless here and you all should be
commenting on Slashdot instead, don't you?
Just a small reminder... It will also make traffic on this list lighter.
Cheers,
Fabian

TRISQUEL IS THE PERFECT DISTRO TILL NOW COMPARED TO OTHERS. TRY IT AND YOU WILL SEE.
Till now? What's the new perfect distro, then?
Medibuntu has a free repo that includes libdvdcss2 and the dvd playback packages.
The issue with these FSF events is their waste of resources. People going to a MS store may already have a reason to go there to buy MS related products. It isn't a Best Buy and not a general purpose store.
I'm also surprised that the FSF, if they planned this in advance, didn't light a fire under Trisquel's feet to get 6 out before the event in some type of monetary compensation. But the FSF is more interested in taking money for themselves instead of taking some donation money to help projects that support their ideology.
I don't like this. Why FSF focus only in Microsoft? Why they did the same thing at Apple Store, Dell Store, HP Store, ATI Store, NVIDIA Store... all the proprietary software company.
And the most of people thinks is impossible to use one 100% free operating system like Trisquel and they never used before, only listen or read about.
They say: "You can't surf on the internet, listen mp3, dvd... Your mouse, keyboard, monitor, DVD drive, flash drive, nothing works..."
