FYI: Notification Area not enabled by default

I recently installed Trisquel 12.0 (x86_64) and found that the Notification Area item is not added to the panel by default.

I use the Typing Break feature built-into the MATE desktop (Keyboard Preferences > Typing Break tab). This feature has a "gauge" in the panel that I'm used to seeing but that doesn't appear by default in Trisquel 12.0. I got the gauge to display by adding the Notification Area item to a panel.
