HDMI audio output not working.

Hello! I've recently chosen to begin to learn GNU/Linux / Trisquel so please bear with me here since I'm a noob.

I have a Geforce 210 gfx card through which I have connected to my monitor via HDMI output. The resolution is fine but, I don't have any sound. I went under the sound settings and the sound is on HDMI and is on but, still no sound is produced.

Could you please tell me potential solutions to this problem and maybe explain to me why it's not working? I figure it has to do with the drivers and I have considered using the onboard audio output but I would really like to just use the sound through the card.

Thanks in advance,
Daniel

I don't believe all systems support sound over HDMI although I might be thinking of something else. Not sure that is your problem here though.

Are you sure the volume is up, and the device is not muted?

See: http://trisquel.info/en/forum/hp-dc7800p-nvidia-geforce-210-always-switches-hdmi-sound-out-instead-integreated-audio

Try to install alsamixer or pavucontrol. Or try the new Linux-libre versions (by default Trisquel 6 use Linux-libre 3.2 - LTS), currently the version is 3.8:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:linux-libre/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux-libre
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Before kernels from non-official sources, one could try Linux-libre 3.5 by installing the package "linux-generic-lts-belenos" (and rebooting the computer).

You could also check whether your sound card is compatible with free software. Take a peek at www.h-node.org.

H-node a hardware database which aims to collect information about how well various devices like laptops, graphic cards and wifi cards work with free software. You can use it to find compatible hardware in the future. You can also contribute by reporting your hardware to it.

If you manage to get your sound card working, please check if the card is reported as compatible or not and update the device entry if necessary with all the details about how did you managed to get it to work.

Hi, maybe is too late but just in case... I'm using Trisquel 6.0 (3.2.0-48-generic-pae) and I got HDMI sound output to work.

1. Go to "System Settings"->"Sound"
2. Select the "Hardware" tab
3. Click on the dropdown list (Profile)
4. Select "Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output"

In step 4, that was what it worked for me. There are several options there. I haven't installed anything else from what it comes with the standard installation set. Just updated the system.

Hope this will help.

Regards,
Daniel.
