Hello,
Novice GNU/linux user. Used various distros over the last ten years for home computer stuff. So I can do basic things.

Using my backup computer recently, with Uruk OS installed. Trisquel is great, but this old computer seemed to like Uruk better.

I feel that I'm missing something, but I can't seem to find a way to search for a document using a simple word search function.

Is there a word search function? If not, is there libre software for that?

Thank you for you help.

Trisquel's default file manager, Caja, has an icon representing a magnifying glass: click on it (or use Ctrl+F) and type.

Uruk uses Thunar by default. And it seems Thunar does not have word search feature.

I added Caja and it works great.

MUCH appreciated!

Now if only I could add Caja to the dock...

You should be able to add any launcher to the dock, including one executing 'caja'.

Alas, it seems not to be. Right click on icon reveals no options. (This is XFCE.)

I have not used Xfce for more than a decade. How do you add "something" to the dock? Maybe drag and drop from the main menu (is Caja in there?) works.

Right, that is the usual practice. But for Caja I have to find Caja in the menu, it says "Run Caja", and then I click to activate. But there is no way to eliminate those steps by simply putting it on the dock.

You can try xfce4-linelight-plugin, which is in the repository: https://goodies.xfce.org/projects/panel-plugins/xfce4-linelight-plugin
