How to display a 360° picture as an immersive panorama?

And of course, using libre software only?

I found this:

https://github.com/ulikk/panoviewer
https://panoviewer.toolforge.org/#Frary_Dining_Hall_360-degree_view.jpg

Now I am also left wondering how the picture itself is produced.

The panorama above seems to be the result of several pictures (badly) stitched together, but I guess an omnidirectional camera could do a better job.

EDIT: sorry I forgot to provide context. I am trying to set up a virtual tour for a public art installation.

I packaged a panoramic stitcher for a Linux distro recently, it was called "hugin". Seemed to work well in my very limited experiments. I don't know if you need to stitch together a panoramic photo out of a bunch of photos, or if you just need to find some way of displaying an already created panoramic picture.

Here's hugin, if it is of any use to you: https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=hugin
I'm assuming it's already available in your Trisquel repo? Might want to have a look at it.

I think lutes was not sure either how that would work, according to what I heard elsewhere. He seems to have taken a leave of absence in the aftermath of his dismissal.

I have taken over the project where he left it, but I am still not sure whether the output will be better displayed through a browser (as Pannellum is supposed to be for) or through any sort of standalone player/viewer. That's why I erased my previous reference to Pannellum, although it seems to be quite a functional tool for in-browser display. The "tour" functionality especially is built-in, using hot spots to navigate between scenes and adjusting fade animation.

I had found and installed hugin on Trisquel 9, but since I knew absolutely nothing about 360° photo stuff before jumping on this project, I did not really know exactly how to use it. Mostly, I do not know how to display the panorama once it has been created by stitching six faces of a cube. Thanks for mentioning it, seems quite good at its intended job indeed.

Tried this: https://wiki.panotools.org/Hugin_Compiling_Ubuntu#PanoGLView but was met with a flurry of broken dependencies. Maybe in-browser display will have to do

And eventually got some success with panini: https://github.com/lazarus-pkgs/panini/releases/tag/v0.72.0.

This is not entirely related, but I thought I could share it here.

This looks like pR0nography. You trying to get banneded for filling our forums up with 1930's Art Deco pR0nography?

You are right, I shall not go further and post any of the unbearable scenes from The Epic of American Civilization.

Time has come to revive mural art. I will soon send an application to the Pomona College in Claremont, they need to redecorate their dining hall asap:

Oh my - yes, that needs to go immediately. Maybe an emergency can of spraypaint or two will be necessary. Think of the children!!

I suspect someone gave it a try with blue paint on that bottom right corner but was caught early in the act.

Sent them a couple of proposals.

They might also want to use the opportunity to get rid of that useless fireplace and to retire these outmoded wood paneling.

Might I suggest van Gogh?

Usually you get paid double for that.

Well he's been acting somewhat erratically of late. Not sure he realizes he has not been fired, only dismissed from that board meeting.

But yes, I am also taking care of his pay in his absence, so your point seems valid.

Andy, were you being serious when you were considering one of these pics pornography?

No, he was not. That was plain clickbait sham, and I thank him for his promotional effort. You walked straight into it.

This thread is about 360° photography in general, not specifically about displaying or capturing immersive explicit content.

Untrue. It is a severe violation of the Troll Lounge Code of Conduct ("TLCC") to be unserious. I do not want to get banneded like Masaru and Hutte. I try to never not be not unserious.

Thank you for having me.
That was a foolish act, like banning quidam and outing him from this forum.

However, Masaru-san is not banned yet. It seems he is just under review. I don't really understand what that under the review mean though.

Under review sounds worse than being banned.

I'm thinking it was because he was riding a mom bike.

Too bad you never knew him like the rest of us did. He was a fan of great film artists and anime artists.

> under review

Shorthand for underpants reviewed. You are being closely monitored by the people reviewing your underpants for literally unhealthy particles. Hung high to dry, burn or suffer any sort of public torture until someone compassionately chooses to take your place, which of course never happens. Having ants in your pants does not help.

Definitely worse than damnation or banishment, because you are left there hanging with a glimpse of hope, possibly forever. Under review is currently under review by several courts of animal rights, with various jurisdictions and debated legitimacy. A moratorium about panties review is also under review, for the sake of inclusiveness.

If true, the moderator of Trisquel should have written "Masaru Suzuqi-underpants-reviewed" instead of just "under-review". If it just says "Masaru Suzuqi-under-review", even Manger-senpai won't know what's going on, will he?
If it says "Masaru Suzuqi-underpants-reviewed" properly, then even Manger-senpai can take countermeasures such as not wearing pants, right?

Right. They lied.

Rumour has it that the freezing process went wrong, and all the frozen dwarfs were killed. Hopefully in their sleep, by berserk carpenter ants.

Let them rest frozen in peace and grill some carpenter ants in their memory. From time to time. As appetizer.

Slightly on-topic digression: I too have been dismissed from the 360° project by now, maybe I shall start one of my own. I just had enough time to come to the conclusion that the critical part is in fact the image capture. The Pannellum guy uses a combination of gorilla tripod and remotely controlled 360° Ricoh Theta S camera. No stitching required but he appears on all pictures, casually checking his mobile.

I'm afraid to bring the conversation back a bit off-topic, but if he doesn't wear pants, will the review be lifted?

He can't take off his pants, he is a dead frozen dwarf. He has ceased to be. He will now permanently be under review.

But you can always upload an autographed song on a restricted access zone where VIPs can display your genuine signature, and possibly a small video of you dancing naked and singing the song. Standard users can also access the song anytime in the commoners lounge but cannot get the autograph nor the video. I reckon this is becoming even more of an evil plan, since you can withdraw access right any time from any VIP at your sole discretion. This is DRM for VIPs.

You could also send them your spoiled panties. That might even turn out to be the most valuable item of the package. They are both scarce and genuine. You can always GPL them, so people can use, modify, distribute, etc. You can also sign them with cloth proof ink, so the buyer's descendants need never worry about troubled times.

Yeah. that's also how Trisquel system and this forum works. Only few chosen VIP can enjoy talking and the commoners you say just listen our boring chat.

That was done long ago, by the Great Trolls of Eons. They could never bear such seriousness and such a titanic workload from "an unspecified or inconsequential person". So he was confined to the remote lands of serious topics and ungrateful users, far away from the Troll Lounge tropics.

I don't get it.

Maybe you should become a professional poet. I feel your talent. If you can make a living as a professional poet, maybe your jealousy of artists will disappear.
Personally, I prefer straightforward, precise, and elaborate simple prose, and I have no interest in boring equivocal verse, but a certain kind of men would like your indirect poetry.

That is to say, I prefer "The gorilla underestimated the human" to "The ogre underestimated the dwarf".

True. The roasting process took longer than expected because it had to be unfrozen first.

> your jealousy of artists will disappear

You are confusing jealousy and envy. Envy never disappears. However, I heeded your wise advice and became a troubadour.

You are wasting your talent. Because there is no longer such professional troubadour nowadays. But wait, you might be able to be a kind of professional YouTroubadour.

This is the Troll Lounge, you should expect some reality distortion by default.

No sarcasm whatsoever, though. Sarcasm is overrated.

I'm super impressed with how we stayed 100% on-topic on ... (checks notes) ... "how to display a 360° picture as an immersive panorama".

This must be some kind of all-time Troll Lounge record for most on-topic-ness.

I just realized everything is a 360° picture displayed as an immersive panorama. So the only remaining question is: how?

Is there any libre virtual reality headset technology I wonder? You could do it through vr headsets.

lanun

That was my initial intention. The panini viewer or things like Pannellum offer decent displays, but of course immersion would vastly improve the experience.

Until now I had found only obfuscated commercial stuff about vr headsets, but:

EDIT: it happens not to be a beginner's DIY project. Also, not sure how difficult it is to use it for other sources than the game platform it was designed for.
