Ultimately depends on the system you are on. If you are on Ubuntu, for example, I believe you could use the included "Startup Disk Creator."

I also believe it could not be ran from any computer. First off, it needs the ability to boot from USB devices. Secondly, its hardware needs to be supported by Trisquel.

EDIT: my bad. I thought you meant running from an USB stick. Please ignore most of this post, then. :/

Well, I actually believe the method works for a USB disk as it works for a USB stick. I have never tried though. The system installed in this way can be persistent (i.e., your changes/files actually stay on the device so that you have them the next time you use it).

Notice that, nowadays, virtually all "normal" computers (I am not talking about smartphones!) can boot a USB device. You may need to specify the boot order in the BIOS or in the UEFI so that the computer tries to boot on the USB device before trying to boot on the hard disk. Notice also that Trisquel runs on virtually all "normal" computer. You may not have the Wifi card or the 3D acceleration working though.

If you have booted from an installation CD you can start the normal installation. When it gets to the question about which drive to use select the USB disk. That normally works.

When your system starts up there is usually a key that brings up the boot menu. This is usually one of the F1 to F12 keys. Most frequently F12, F10, or F2.
