Hello,

I use the web search engine DuckDuckGo for some months, but I used it only in English. For others language I use StartPage.

Now I would like to use only DuckDuckGo (to live without StartPage). I have two questions :

1. How to search in others languages ? (in the parameters, I can change the language of interface but can I change the language of results ? to have results in German, or web pages in French, or any other language ? my mother language is French but I like learning others languages)

2. How to search for pdf files ? With DuckDuckGo, when I type "social psychology pdf", I have the same results as if I type "social psychology", no pdf.

Thank you in advance for your answers !

I hope Google is no more in your daily life, like a prism. ^^

1. Dunno if you can search by language but to only search .fr web addresses, append your search with site:.fr. You can use that also to search e.g. site:trisquel.info

2. Append your query with filetype:pdf

I avoid all things google.

Why on earth would you ditch Startpage for DuckDuckGo. First, Startpage/Ixquick are audited and certified via Europrise, an external body. Second they are based in Europe and owned by a European company, whereas DuckDuckGo are based in the United States and owned by a US company. Why is this important? Well you seem concerned about Prism, DuckDuckGo are just as vulnerable to NSA surveillance (including PRISM) as any other US company - the fact they DuckDuckGo state they don't log anything means absolutely nothing, they can be compelled by law to log your searches and be legally gagged from ever telling you.

Ditching Startpage for DuckDuckGo is completely backwards and makes no sense from a privacy perspective, whatsoever. You would rather take the word of a company with no external audits to verify their claims and in a position where they are vulnerable to state surveillance laws than the word of a company that has been externally audited and certified (in fact the first ever company to be certified by Europrise) and is completely immune to the US surveillance machine?

Please explain your logic?

I like DDG for the bangs. I search Wikipedia or a torrent site or Amazon easily from my Abrowser search box. If I need Startpage, I just do !s at the end to get the Startpage results.

Thank you for your answers, especially the r:fr, r:de, etc.

I don't know the technic of web search engines. I just move according to my librist philsophy. I have no idea how the web works, no idea about the hardware, few about code and software.

Actually I trust StartPage, I trust DuckDuckGo. But StartPage seems to find the same results as Google.

That is because all Startpage results are taken directly from Google but in a way in which Google never see the person making the search or is able to access any of their personal data, nor place cookies. That is the whole point of STartpage, to provide Google results without the privacy issues.

If you want to receive results that are not from Goolge you can use Startpage's sister search engine, Ixquick.com (they are both owned by the same company) which does not use Google results.

Okay, I will try IxQuick.

The google results are under bias, they change according to you (your computer, what you did before) ...
