Ryzen as most (if not all) of the AMD videos cards requires non-free firmware.

There is a common misconception that it should work as the video driver is free, but that driver requires non-free firmware for it to work.

For several AMD cards 3D acceleration nor having a widescreen resolution is possible, IIRC seems that ryzen cards can set a correct resolution with some tweaks, but 3D is still not possible.

To get the best possible experience from linux-libre kernels you might want to use a device with Intel video card acceleration, it won't compete with high end cards from ndivia or amd, but will run most applications trisquel provide on the repositories.

If you are using trisquel, you might want to upgrade the default kernel from 5.4 to 5.8 or even add jxself linux-libre* repo to test newer releases that could easy setting the correct resolution.

Thank you for explaining this, Ark. I was waiting for such clarification and I now know my hunch was right Ryzen is proprietary software based.

It always happens to new users of a Free distro that they find out their hardware wifi/videocards/printers has no support without non-free bits, with time we learn and pick better the hardware that we buy/run.

I've seen some weird screen scaling due the lack of a free driver/firmware for videocards, while not impossible to use, it's not pleasant.
I would say that if it doesn't work with the latest ISO images, it's likely it won't improve much on performance with new libre kernels, but if you are willing to debug the performance and document it, that will help other new comers to find out about it.

There is h-node.org which can be a good place to document your findings.
Cheers!

What would you like to do?

I would install trisquel on a supported machine, maybe something with Intel integrated videocard to get the best experience on video resolution / 3d acceleration.

Maybe replacing your machine is not possible for you at this point, in that case maybe you can give trisquel a try when you replace that specific machine when you have a supported videocard.

Now if you already are looking to change that equipment as a gift for you on New Year, then I would suggest pick
- Intel for videocard
- Atheros for WiFi

Some options here:
https://www.fsf.org/givingguide/v12/

Or test your machine before installing, using LiveISO/USB from trisquel 9.0.1 or 10.0 on a model that you'll like to get.

So, the question remains, with the information you have now.
