I am using a Dell Inspiron N5050 and I recently dropped it by accident of course.

I am only able to boot from a usb flash drive which thankfully I had setup with trisquel already before the drop happened. I have lost access to my internal hard drive it doesn't get detected on boot. I am also unable to access my portable hard drive it didn't get dropped it did fall but it was in my laptop lapdesk which I caught before it hit the floor. My laptop unfortunately did drop and hit the floor not real hard nothing broke off just have paint on the laptop lid from the door I was leaning on and it fall. just the part where the battery goes hit the floor the internal dvd drive ejected when it fell I had no dvd in it not sure why it did that. I just tested a audio cd and it is able to detect and mount it. I just have issues with mounting internal and external drives. I have the internal harddrive bio password protected and it no longer asks for that on boot should I disable that? My screen seems to be fine don't notice any damages from it getting scratched by the door the lid got scratched not the lcd screen.

I tested out my music player my sansa clip plus by sandisk and I am able to mount that. The audio player has no moving parts.

Also I am unable to use my external dvd drive anymore since I dropped my laptop. I didn't drop the external dvd drive it was not in my laptop lapdesk.

I've never had this issue before what should I do?

I fixed my laptop when the fax broke recently and I fixed that successfully. So if I need to do any internal repairs such as reconnecting stuff I can do that.

What should I do?

I am able to view the fact that I have my portable hard drive connected in gparted.
What would normally happen is that once I plug in my portable hard drive it would show up in nautilus then I click on it for it to be mounted. Now it is not doing what it use to do. I am unable to to see the icon when I plug it in anymore.

Found a video on how to open the portable drive if I need to open it.

Was the laptop on when it crashed (i.e., the internal disk was spinning)???

Whenever a drive falls while in operation I am worried of:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_crash

This is less of an issue if it were off (and, in theory, the heads were parked away from the rotating platter.) Hence the question.

As a tangent, a nice thing in some laptops (I know its present in some ThinkPads) is that they have an accelerometer to detect when the machine is falling and park the head in response.

I wasn't using the internal hard drive but it might have been mounted same with the external. I do not think I had anything running on the drives and I think both my laptop and external drive do not spin when they are not being actively used.

Well I guess might have to take both the internal and external hard drives and reconnect them. I notice that this seems to fix the problem as I have had this issue with external hard drives I dropped in the pass. Well it doesn't happen now because I have a lapdesk that has pockets with a zipper that seem to be for portable hard drives because of the shape of it and size. So now they don't fall off from the lapdesk anymore. :)

I was using as I am now trisquel 7 off of a sandisk 15 gb flash drive usb at the time of the accidental drop.
I ripped several cds and they all turned out good so the dvd drive seems to be okay the internal one.

Well I just decided to ask here for advice cause I think taking something apart should be the last resort or maybe I am wrong?

I need to clean my laptop anyways from the scratch on top and dust. So I think I will just take it apart.

How can I open a portable hard drive without breaking the case? With the toshiba portable hd I broke the case from trying to open it. so eventually I will have to buy one for it later on when I have the money.

What cases you guys recommend that are easier to open and put back together? I think the drives are standard laptop size since they are portable probably they are 2.5" drives. Well at least they(my external hds) look the same size as the one in my laptop when I took it apart to replace the fan.

My huge backup drive works fine with those USB ports just the external portable and the dvd drive are not being detected and the internal hd too. I just ripped some cds and put it on the drive so it works fine to test the usb ports and the internal dvd drive.

The external portable harddrive(fall but didn't hit the ground) and dvd drive(that I didn't drop) just doesn't get detected by my usb ports.
The light turns on with the portable hd when I plug it in and makes normal noises of responding to being connected. I am just not able to get the hard drive to come up in nautilus like I am with my portable music player or my backup desktop hard drive via the same usb ports on my laptop.

My big external hard drive my biggest drive, my android mobile, and mp3 player are able to connect and get charged and access the files on those drives. Fortunately it seems something is wrong with my computer because I tried using it(portable drive) at the library and I am able to access the portable drive fine on their computer. I will try and replug my internal drive back in and usb ports. Then backup trisquel and reinstall and then restore backup that should fix the problem! :)
I will touch base with you all that have helped me back later if it fixed the problem! Thanks guys!
Well for your information I would recommend and for me also to only get external drives that don't come in a case already and buy a rugged case that has shock protection and easy to open in case you drop it and it doesn't response so you are able to replug the drive back in. Because in my experience of dropping drives replugging in the drives from the usb to hard drive ports adaptor fixes the issue of not being able to access the drives. Or just get only solid state memory drives instead so you don't have to worry about breaking it from dropping it.

You might have damaged your USB ports

I recently dropped my 1TB HDD on the floor which resulted in it being damaged
irreversibly it made noise then seized to function thus losing 350GB of
invaluable data.i could not transfer any of its data via usb other HD or even

the second HDD of 500GB

I fixed it. It was because I was missing screws on bottom that holds the hard drive in place. So the sudden jerk and almost hitting the ground caused the drive to become unplugged.

The USB ports work fine now. Just on safe side I removed the board then put it back And replugged in the cable. It is able to mount external portable great now.
