Hey everybody!
I'm really happy right now because my plan to free my smartphone worked!!
I had an galaxy s4 and decided to sell it and buy a galaxy s2 instead.
When i finally got it, i installed replicant on it - it was very easy!!
Actually i imagined the whole process to be a lot more time consuming and complicated; i encourage everybody to do the same thing, it's just such an awesome feeling.
Can't tell how much it bothered me that all this proprietary shit was running on my device and i wasn't even allowed to remove certain applications; that's over now!
and i feel very... privileged I would say. Like, i'm one of very few people that own a phone with an 100% free operating system; a phone that doesn't treat my like dirt, as least when it comes to the OS.

It's true, running a phone with a free os means sacrificing a lot more functionality than running a freed pc;
but honestly, do i really need all this stuff?
Replicant looks really nice, feels stable and smooth and i can do a lot with it, like navigation (OsmAnd), making voip calls (webrtc), browse the internet (even with tor), check the weather...
As soon as i got my owncloud running again, i think things will be quite convenient.

Next problem is my tablet... a lot more difficult than my phone. Currently i'm wondering if i really need this device or if a galaxy tab 2 with replicant would be acceptable for me.
It's kind of hard... no videos whatsoever, slow 2d graphics...
a tablet with cyanogenmod is another option, but i think the non-free components would just bother me too much. I just know that i can't accept the current situation... i don't even have root access for this device and the google play store is running all the time!

I like watching anime really much, and well, in fullhd that's just awesome...
But i really wonder whether i need this on my tablet so bad.

Anyway, if you think about freeing your phone, just do it!
It feels GREAT!

Congratz!
'Tis a great day, a great day.
Yea, it is sad that the GS2 doesn't support videos and such. (Do any Replicant phones, actually? I don't think so.)
I wonder if it'll be added in the future.

No, there are no replicant devices that can play videos at the moment :/
not a single one even supports wifi...

What about the out-of-stock Openmoko + GTA04 processor?

I don't have a clue what's the difference between Openmoko and GTA04, and how you can combine them, but the latter one
doesn't support media encoding according to
http://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki/ReplicantStatus

And no offense to anyone, but it looks... not acceptable to me...

And actually i don't really need video on a phone. Rather on a tablet.

GTA04 is a motherboard that can be used as an update to Openmoko phones (which originally ship with weaker motheboards), if I understand correctly.

But the Freerunner can hardly be considered a smartphone.

It can do computational tasks, you can program it to do just about anything lightweight... I don't really understand how the Freerunner isn't a smartphone.

How long does the battery last after a full recharge before needing another?

it depends on the screen brightness etc
but i found when i was using it alot of the time with the screen brightness at medium it lasted about 12 hours

but i was using it all day on the day i can remember
so it will be more if you change the screen brightness
and keep the screen off most of the time

here the openmoko's page about the battery

With the GTA04 it seems to be smart enough to run Replicant..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1IM9Vd2_2s
