I have an old Dell Inspiron 530S that I got from a pc dealer
after my old pc died.
It had Linux Mint 13 on it but it had some issues and while trying to fix those I made a mistake and had to delete the OS.
I searched through linux OS and found this one and decided to give it a try.
Any advice on the best way to optimize it so I can get the best out of it.I just want something to write with, maybe print stuff off and watch videos and surf the web.Nothing exotic.
Thanks
Linux is not an OS. GNU/Linux is: https://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux-and-gnu.html
The name matters: https://www.gnu.org/gnu/why-gnu-linux.html
Just try the live version of Trisquel and if you find it too slow (e.g., if you have less than 1 GB of RAM), take Trisquel Mini: https://trisquel.info/download
If you want to test the future Trisquel 7 (Mini or not), here are the ISOs: http://devel.trisquel.info/makeiso/iso/
Yea- you might need to upgrade the kernel after installing Trisquel 6.01 and/or try Trisquel 7. Keep in mind Trisquel 7 is still under development.
The Trisquel project takes a stern stance of free software. If your unfamiliar with free software principles I'd check out the Free Software Foundation's web site and read up on it: http://www.fsf.org/. The freedom bit is the main advantage or reason to go with the distribution (not that it isn't a great distribution for other reasons, but there is a clear and undeviating focus on freedom). This and it being a relatively easy distribution to utilize is why I personally like it.
The other thing to note about Trisquel is some hardware may not work. It's a double edged sword in that hardware that doesn't work (particularly after the kernel upgrade) is likely not free software friendly. Finding that out from the get-go lets you avoid non-free software and all the problems that go with it. I even advise people try ones hardware out with Trisquel first- regardless of the distribution. The one thing you can be pretty confident in is if it works with Trisquel that there is nothing stopping the community from supporting your hardware. You won't have to worry about manufacturers failing to release updated drivers, having to follow complicated installation instructions (often after each upgrade), or suffering from poor support due to incompatible development models (as an example poor battery life can result).
I have the Trisquel 6 installed. No problems except a couple of minor ones.Took me a while to figure out how to get youtube to work.Fortunately I found an old thread where some people helped someone else with the problem and it helped me.I am having problems with Google not letting me type youtube comments but I'll figure it out. I don't use much hardware.I have an older model lexmark printer I wanted to use but if I can't it's no big deal. Thanks for the responses.
The Lexmark printers frequently won't work in Trisquel due to the need for proprietary drivers.
HP's printers are usually a better bet, but it still depends on the model. Got to be careful because some line ups are fraught with non-free components (pretty much all of the laser all-in-ones for example and many of the low end lasers, but the mid-to-high end b/w and color lasers are OK depending on the model, and many of the inkjet all-in-ones are OK too, as well as the regular color inkjet printers- again this is of HP's current line up, and nobody elses that I'm referring).
There are still some other issues even after taking all that into consideration. For instance the version of HPLIP included in Trisquel is older than whats currently readily available on the market so simply walking into a store you'll find all or nearly all of the printers are not really Trisquel-friendly even if you have a list of good printers and know exactly what to look for (HP does do an excellent job documenting it, but, you still need to know what to look at, so :( ).
The one other problem is if you do pick up a Trisquel-unfriendly printer that you think is free software friendly and then install HP's driver directly you might encounter non-free software. HP's utilities are patched in Trisquel so that there are no non-free models it'll work with. Despite the HP driver being free it downloads non-free pieces on you unless you get the patched version from the repository.
Yes ANGRYWOLVES, I have the same issue with youtube comments. Then again, most of them are tripe anyway!
When I try to comment, a box pops up briefly, then vanishes.
In the end, it is a trivial matter!
Some of the people who have channels are nice and I have become friends with a few of them.So I want to be able to comment on their videos.I have to figure out what is blocking the comments.
Why did you pick trisquel over any of the others ? Any special reason ? Mine was just luck.I had to use another pc to download the torrent on to a cd and the cds I had only could hold 700 mbs.So some of the others distributions I looked at were too big to fit the disc.smiles.
Because it commits itself to software that is fully free, as in it gives you the freedom users deserve (in our opinion, anyway). www.fsf.org
I like the simplicity of Trisquel, as well as it being free, its not over loaded with artwork or graphical effects. For me it's a plus that it comes with everything, including office apps, built in, so I'm ready to work straight away. I also like the speed of installion, with Trisquel, I can be desktop ready in about 20 minutes.
Agree that it was very fast and didn't require multiple steps to install.
I still have to figure outthe youtube comment isssue though.
Plus there are nonyoutube videos and websites I want to go to that have video attached to them and those videos simply won't play.
I don't know how to fix those issues yet.
If anyone has any suggestions about those please let me know.
Thanks.,
well I have the gnash viewer already installed, so obviously it needs something else to work on the other videos.
Check out the other solutions. I personally use ViewTube and UnPlug (when ViewTube does not handle the site).
Perhaps Lightspark could help you: https://launchpad.net/~sparkers
Would ice tea work ?
IcedTea is a Java plugin, so it would not work.
There is an extension called Unplug that you can use (it's in the addons list). Additionally, I have had success with a program called get_flash_videos. It's in the repos.
I found this on youtube, if you want to post youtube comments:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWqj7wOw_K4
may not work for everybody.
I will probably try unplugged.thanks.
"youtube-dl" is a good CLI utility to get videos from YouTube and plenty of other sites: https://rg3.github.io/youtube-dl/
