Install Printer
Hello,
I have a newbie question. How can I configure my printer? I have a Brother DCP-145. I downloaded the two drivers already. How can I install them. I am used to Xubuntu for a while and tried it that way, but it doesn't work. How can I manage to do that.
Many thanks.

I do not think you need to download any driver by hand. Are they even free software?
There is a utility in the "System settings" to add printers... but I ended up using an older one (that used to be shipped with Trisquel 6): "system-config-printer-gnome" that you can, for instance, install from the "Synaptic package manager" (in the "System settings" as well).
Thank you. But when I try to install a printer in the system settings, the button to add a printer is inactive. When I did that in Ubuntu, the installed driver didn't work. So I installed the one from Brother, which worked properly. I do have the drivers for my printer on a flash-card. Under Ubuntu I opened the driver with the software installation. How does that work in Trisquel, which is ( btw ) a nice system.

Have you tried "system-config-printer-gnome"? If it cannot install the printer, then the drivers are proprietary and you should use the printer if you value your freedoms.
Yes, I've tried it, but the printerdriver seems to be proprietary. Ich think, you meant "should not use"... ;) That doesn'sound good. Which printer is recommendable? I like inkjets. I scanner would be fine, but not necessary.
This driver actually is free: http://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadhowto.aspx?c=eu_ot&lang=en&prod=dcp145c_eu_as&os=128&dlid=dlf006678_000&flang=4&type3=576
It consists of 3 files, all under the GPL, with no binary blobs or anything.
The Hardware database (that can work with fully free operating system) can be found on https://h-node.org/hardware/catalogue/en. (may you have new entry ; contribute)
Many thanks. :) Sorry for asking stupid questions. How can I install these files?
You might use that tutorial just with your files. In my case the brother drivers were open source. Check at the bottom of the page... There should be the source code http://stepsilon.com/ubuntu/install-printer-brother-dcp-7055-ubuntu.
Many thanks. I'll check that out and let you know, if any problems occur. Thank you.
Many thanks! This has helped me connect to 3 printers in my house with no external software required! an HP 2050 series, an Epson Workforce 545, and a Samsung ML-1665!
