Both unity and unity-2d are packages in the Trisquel repositories. You can easily install them with your favourite interface to APT (e.g., the Synaptic package manager).

Thanks Magic Banana.

I installed unity from Synaptic. I expected the login screen to show an option for a Unity session, but there was not, even after restarting.

At one point, I chose User-defined Session, ut I only got the desktop background with no panels. I did a hard reset.

When I enter the unity command at the command line, I get fata compiz errors like:

Compiz (opengl) - Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing

Is your system really able of 3D acceleration with free software? It looks like it is not. You should consider unity-2d instead. It relies on Metacity instead of Compiz.
