In MATE, you may be able to get what you are looking for by going to System > Preferences > Look and Feel > Appearance (or by clicking on "Appearance" in the Control center).

Then click on the "Customize..." button at the bottom of the "Theme" tab. Then to the "Pointer" tab, then I believe you are going to find what to do easily.

If you are using Trisquel Mini (and LXDE), you will need to edit the desktop.conf file instead. The path should be similar to /home/noba/.config/lxsession/Trisquel-mini/desktop.conf, and the file should look like this one. Open it with Mousepad and look for this key nearby the end of the file: iGtk/CursorThemeSize. Then set it to a higher value that fits your needs and save. You will need to log off and back in for the change to be visible.

It worked for me on a Trisquel Mini 10.0.1 live session.

Oh yes, sorry about that. I believe you can also type a path in the address bar in PCManFM, that way you do not need to switch "show hidden" on and off.
