Greetings ladies and Gentlemen:

I'm using Google Earth to do some project with my team and something in my heart is hurting.

Is there a free software replacement to Google earth? I need to be able to put 3D objects in there, pointing places inside the program, calculate distances, putting markers, etc.

Thank you

There might be some, depending on your use case:
-> Look at the FSF high priority project lists on the fsf website, they might have some infos on that.
-> google earth uses KML (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyhole_Markup_Language), so take that into account when looking for a replacement.

If you do find a good alternative, you could respond here by mentioning it.

Denis.

One or more of these might be useful.

I haven't used OpenStreetMap <https://www.openstreetmap.org/>, but it may help with this.

You can also install the Emerillon map viewer (little to download on a GNOME desktop).

I just tried that, and frankly, it's a piece of crap. Search doesn't work at all. Better to use GNOME Maps (package gnome-maps).

For me, it doesn't even run.
It says that some config file wasn't found and gives a segmentation fault.

Same thing here. I use GNOME Shell.

@onpon4: how did you manage to run gnome-maps?

I don't know, I didn't have any trouble with it. Unless it was related to when I was using the stable GNOME PPA, but that wouldn't make sense, because I got rid of that with ppa-purge.

openstreetmap is a very good option, you may also like "marble or marble-qt (no kde depends.)" both are an apt-get away. Marble includes a virtual globe and openstreetmap access from your desktop.
