Libreboot expirience
Hello everyone, sorry for the slight offtopic.
in general, I assembled a computer 775 Libreboot + GT710 passive
installed trisquel 10 netinstall + minimal gnome (apt install gnome-session gnome-terminal)
works great. before buying, I delved into for a long time on which green video cards nouveau would work well
(it is worth recalling that a full freedom computer can be either with nouveau or some blue video cores, AMD is not, they need a blob for normal operation.
although the repositories contain the relatively outdated gnome 3.36, it works well, unlike KDE it never crashed, either in X11 mode or Wayland, no complaints. Libreboot is installed with the latest version, along with Seabios. (I still don’t understand what is the difference with SeaBIOS, and without it), it is a beta version, but no problems were found. I installed it because in new versions there was a big cleanup of the code and the graphics stack was rewritten.
I don’t know how it is in Western countries, but in Russia everything is very bad on the power supply market, normal options go from about $ 100-120, which is expensive for me, given that my assembly eats about 100-150W, not more.
it was decided to look at a local flea market for old-fashioned Powerman power supplies, legendary pieces of iron with an endless life cycle, with a cost of $ 10-15. but, in my city they were not. and then I remembered that a block was lying around somewhere from my 15-year-old computer, searching, it turned out to be Q-Dion, opening it, it was in good external condition.
this power supply will be just as good as powerman, and I assure you, these 2 old-timers will be better than 80% of all budget power supplies in stores. picking it up, I immediately felt a good weight, thick metal and a thick braid of wires, exactly as it should be, and not a disgrace like aerocool and the like. as you already understood, he earned remarkably without any flaws.
E5405, the most budgetary in the 775 line, acted as a processor, it does not have an L3 cache. but L2 is gigantic by those standards, even in some sense now, 12MB is my respect. and you know what? yes, it works fast, honestly)
with protection against spectre disabled in the operating system + Abrowser 100 + Ublock + 5 other privacy add-ons = heavy sites like youtube load instantly, temperature with a standard intel cooler + thermal interface MX4 - 40-43 * in idle time, very rarely reaches it under heavy load up to 60*.
I can’t say much about the video card, I recently watched a movie in VLC, but, apparently due to the fact that the video is processed by the processor by default, there were tears on the screen. to transfer the processing to the video card, I did the following:
(don't forget to always install ffmpeg) opened the VLC settings, in the video tab, in the output item, selected the VDPAU output.
also in the codecs tab, in the decoding item, I chose decoding VDPAU - apparently because it transferred the video processing to the video card, the picture stopped tearing and went smoothly, the GT710 should play up to 4K resolution without any problems.
something like this, like described all the interesting points, if there is something interesting, ask let's talk
ah, yes, many thanks to Ark74 for fixing the network installation, just in time for my purchase of a computer))
this person has helped me many times on the forum, so Trisquel has been and will be my favorite distro.
I also wanted to become a sponsor, but Russian cards are not accepted yet, I'll wait until the situation is resolved.
if somewhere it is written clumsily or incomprehensibly, I translated this text through a translator, since I don’t know English.
do good!
