linux mint menu, in gnome2/mate desktop

Hey guys.
I have recently tried to install MATE and while it feels nice (basically GNOME 2, which I love), I thought I would get the linux mint menu, which I didn't. I am referring to the menu that has the searchbox (automatically picking the right program or file when you type) and the big buttons with your preferred applications... What am I missing here??
Also, as a second question, what are your favorite desktops? Gnome, lxde, xfce, kde, unity (oh God, no... lol), etc..?

I've used them all for several years and so far my favorite workstation uses modified Xfce with a few goodies from LXDE on Debian stable with all traces of ubuntu, gnome, canonical, zeitgeist, bluetooth, trackers, and other trash removed.

SLIM is my DM of choice with LightDM a distant second. SLIM is supposedly inaccessible remotely. Also, I stopped using cell phones and Wifi after a friend with the IT dept of the FBI explained that ANY technology using wireless (of any kind) is accessible from anywhere at anytime by any agency or other allowed corporation (and trust me, they're all corporations). He's been on the job for over 35 years, and working with computers for over 40, so I figure he knows. :-) He told me that any GNU+Linux distro using Ubuntu has code that shares all surfing and other info with Canonical, even Trisquel. We checked it out, and he is correct. You can test it by adding the "Privacy" app from Trisquel.

We now have Debian Xfce and LXDE on most of the work and personal machines. Couple of folks like Enlightenment, and althought it is lean and fast, I'll stick with Xfce4, except on machines used for testing purposes.

If you just want to make the menu icons larger in Xfce, use mousepad to add this code to the file:
~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xsettings.xml
Beats the heck out of gnome fallback, mate, cinnamon, or anything else I've tried. Look about 2/3 of the way down that page for:
Property name="IconSizes" type="string" - just add:
value="gtk-menu=24,24:gtk-button=24,24:panel-applications-menu=32,32:panel-directory-menu=32,32" which is currently blank.

On small monitors you can use these settings: property name="IconSizes" type="string" value="gtk-menu=16,16:gtk-button=16,16:panel-applications-menu=22,22:panel-directory-menu=32,32"

LOL good luck man... soon, very soon, the "high priests" of Trisquel will start destroying each bit of your very soul... you dared saying that in some way Trisquel is not the best OS in the world, they will not forgive you :S

Lol, seriously now, expect a debate here ;)

Even more seriously, could you provide more information about that "security flaw"? I would like to investigate that.
On the other hand, do you know how to make the "search box" in the menu (in MATE or some other desktop)?
Thanks =)

Mint menu is a separate package called "mintmenu" (it's probably available from wherever you installed MATE). After it's installed you should be able to add it to your panel like any other panel widget.

As for my favorite desktop - probably Xfce right now, but I enjoyed Gnome 2 before that.

Thanks =)
I will probably just give up on MATE and use only what is in the Debian repository (that is one security rule of mine, never add PPA unless absolutely necessary, but I wanted to try MATE).
Why do you prefer xfce?

Favorite DE is GNOME, KDE is a fairly good alternative (though I haven't used KDE much), and Cinnamon is decent, but cluttered.

Since many of you use XFCE, have you tried Whisker Menu?

Hum, that looks good =)
Too bad (again) is necessary to add a PPA.
Isn't anything in the repos that will give an improved menu?
Whisker looks good, especially for something like xfce

Hey, GNUser - been a while. Whisker Menu is included with Debian 8 "Jessie" and it's now my favorite menu, although I seldom use a menu. It will be used on 'Freedom 101' desktop machines coming out later this year. If you need backport info for wheezy, give a shout.

What does Whisker do that one can't do in the XFCE app finder? If, for instance, I hit 'alt+f3' and type 'thun', then hit the down arow, I get a list containing 'thunar' and 'thunderbird'.

My favorite DE is Enlightenment - discovered last week - and I don't use any DM, I'm using it on Arch Linux (I first tried in Debian but it gave problems :S and I need non-free wifi drivers unfortunately so I can't use Parabola). I really like the look of it (but I don't know how to use vpn, I would need to connect to a pptp one , if someone knows it would help me :/)

@GNUser Unfortunately I don't think any OS is 100% secure but at least what islander says could be corrected in Trisquel ? :)

Using XFCE in Arch, with no display manager; really need to parabolize this thing!

Nevermind, those packages are WAY too old. May have to search through the launchpad site or via Y-PPA Manager.
