Live sport stream
I am watching live sport streams on the web somtimes. But this pages use swf14 format and I can"t watch the streams. Any solution to this problem or I have to live without to watching sports stream? I don't want to return to the non free distros. Thanks
The first step you should take is to write an email to the people who insist of flash.
Then search for flash on these forums, there has been a lot of threads on the subject.
One solution I found was to search for rtmp streams of (non-english) tv channels which broadcast the sport event and download those using rtmpdump. You can find many websites that list live rtmp streams using your favorite search engine. Some live streams use HTTP dynamic streaming which can be viewed and downloaded using livestreamer:

I've found that with some sites if I set the user agent to Android or iPad that it will serve up an H.264 stream instead of pushing Flash.
Of course this requires an extension for Abrowser or via the dev tools in Chromium under the emulate option.
Actually in Abrowser the user agent can be changed via about:config by setting general.useragent.override. That is, if you know the UA string you wish to use. And this is not per site, for that an extension is needed.
For a per-site control, I personally use those two add-ons: https://trisquel.info/en/browser/addons?keys=uacontrol
:)
Nice!
For some odd reason I hadn't thought of this simple solution for a site I skim frequently and some of which articles contain video clips. Unfortunately while they have excellent support for a variety of devices they don't have support for GNU/Linux without Adobe Flash. Rather than default to something modern browsers can see (without a proprietary plug-in) it pops up an error insisting you download a supported version of Adobe Flash plug-in. I did actually move to a new source for the same essential content. Its more limited however, but still always does HTML5 video by default.
Which is all interesting because I've used this trick to get around crummy security camera hardware before that would only work if Adobe Flash was installed. For some reason I didn't think of it for a site that I browse relatively frequently.
Many awful situations can be avoided because the devices/sites stream in HTML5 and/or other formats without flash, for other devices that don't support Adobe Flash.
* tested against BBC news site which has video clips in Adobe Flash by default

I use this addon to switch my user agent: https://trisquel.info/en/browser/addons/user-agent-switcher
With it, the user agent can be changed much more easily.
(Tools>>[Name of current user agent](probably "Default User Agent")>>iPhone 3.0, to appear as an iPhone.)
