M.2 Drive Install Fail EXT4 Success XFS

Hello,

I have a big problem, the default file system EXT4 has seemed to try to force a ESP partition when doing the encrypted install or regular install which causes a install fail every time when it reaches the Grub2 bootloader install at the end.

I got one computer installed using XFS as it defaulted to that file system for unknown reasons. That is how I have figured it is some odd thing with EXT4 trying to create a ESP partition.

I do not know how to generate a Encrypted partition table on my own as I rely too heavily on the automated systems. But I could try if the directions are sound enough.

Thanks

This has been a problem I have had a while now, but was able to download a jenkins copy where the default install was xfs filesystem!

I re-downloaded a fresh copy today from the Swedish computer academy.

This copy seems to be good in helping me explain this issue further!

So it works great with Intel cpu's with M.2 drives it seems to have a graphical display at first boot sequence asking which language than the choice of what to do graphically. After following to the encrypted setup where it partitions the drive it chooses the XFS file system at which point I KNOW THIS INSTALL WILL WORK.

So I took the same Install disc and started the install of an AMD computer.

The install did not have the graphical display or asking which language. It further was a lined item of things to try TRISQUEL or install TRISQUEL.

After choosing install and getting to the same place of encrypted format it automatically chooses the EXT4 Format and adds a 3rd line that is something like is what on all the other Ubuntu Distro's with an extra ESP module showing up.

Every time weather INTEL or AMD it will fail to install at the Grub2 Bootloader and crash when TRISQUEL chooses the EXT4 File System Format.

But this New CD seems to hold to the AMD and INTEL segregation whereas the past Install discs would always default to EXT4 weather AMD or INTEL.

Possibly different Micro-Codes from AMD and INTEL along with EXT4 favoritism on the part of AMD Micro-Code.

This is a M.2 Solid State Drives also which could effect how the CPU chooses it's micro-code?

I don't really know the root cause, but I would guess it lies somewhere in the CPU micro-code along with the Solid State Drives Micro-code interaction trying to do an operation which fails to bind the Grub2 Bootloader.

I successfully installed 2 other Ubuntu distros Peppermint and Elementary on computers that failed the TRISQUEL install. Both distros successfully installed the EXT4 File System WITH the extra ESP module.

Using the same install disc, I ran into a Intel Cpu that links to the same lined screen and tries to install the EXT4 Fail ESP format.

And conversely I got an AMD Cpu to install using the same disc but it was XFS defaulted to.

So I am leaning more towards the SSD Hard-Drive Micro-Code messing with the install.

It would be better if TRISQUEL would offer a strict XFS default install disc as well as a 2nd if wanted EXT4 disc for the M.2 drive era.

Of course it could still be a combination of CPU micro-code and the hard-drive micro code messing things up.

BUT don't get me wrong the hard-drives would still install if it defaulted to XFS as I have already had TRISQUEL installed previously on them.

Choosing the "Something else" type of install (or whatever it is called nowadays), you are invited to manually partition the disks and choose whatever type of filesystem you want for these partitions. There is no need for several "install discs".

It still fails after you switch, probably due to the M.2 drive Microcode or hidden trojans have "hooked" the EXT4 file format.

NOTE that the install first screens are different as well.

The fix I used was M.2 drive Hopping to get everything working.

The hard drives that would not install on one computer I moved to a cpu that did and it worked for 3 computers that failed M.2 drive install on other CPU's (Intel and AMD)

It's ok I don't believe in magic and no that certainly would not work in my situation, but I did try that however and failed mr. banana. Maybe your magic only works in your pants, and not my computers.

My Trisquel 8 is actually installed on a M.2 SSD. I used the regular (MATE) ISO. Well, actually a release candidate version of Trisquel because, at that time, Trisquel 8 was not officially released.
