Migrate from Ubuntu to Trisquel without reinstalling
I am thinking to use mate
and remove GNOME
In fact, I fail to remove GNOME
for this
I thought of using
ubuntu-mate
and use this
http://trisquel.info/en/wiki/migrate-ubuntu-trisquel-without-reinstalling
its this good to Migrate from Ubuntu to Trisquel without reinstalling??
or Is there a way to remove GNOME??
Why don't you do a NetInstall and fire 'sudo apt-get install mate-desktop' from it?
And what is the error when you try to remove GNOME?
hi Magic Banana
I am blind
the NetInstall does not contain Screen Reader
I hope it's not an insensitive question but how do you use your computer, being blind?
He uses Orca, which is a screen reader.
I can not find the interface package name
What does it mean? Anyway, you can as well install "mate-desktop" on another edition of Trisquel 7 and choose it at the graphical login screen (assuming it is accessible).
hi Magic Banana
I can install it
but I cant remove GNOME
I can not find GNOME package name
I don't use the default desktop, but I think is 'trisquel' metapackage which installs all the GNOME stuff.
More accurately, the "trisquel" package depends on everything in the GNOME edition of Trisquel. The package which provides the Trisquel session itself is the trisquel-session package (though without a lot of other stuff depended on by the trisquel package, it would be a rather bare system; you could get around this without the trisquel package by installing the gnome package as well, I suppose).
Indeed. Installing "mate-desktop", removing the "trisquel" meta-package and executing 'sudo apt-get autoremove' should do the trick. However, take at the look at the list 'sudo apt-get autoremove' would remove before confirming this removal. If there are packages you want, then install them explicitly first. In this way, 'sudo apt-get autoremove' would not remove them.
hi onpon4
is this mene I must remove the "trisquel" package?
I'm afraid from break the system
Perhaps it would be easiest to do a new Trisquel install and not select a desktop environment? Or select mate if that is offered in the installer. This is a screenshot of the later stages of "Install Trisquel in text mode". (Dunno if that works with orca.)
It can also be triggered on an installed system withsudo tasksel
(Use arrow keys to move, space to select and tab to jump to ok, esc to cancel.)

I cant use orca in install Trisquel in text mode

if I do a new Trisquel install and not select a desktop environment
I cant use orca
orca nede desktop environment to run
Ah, right, Sorry.
My guess is you need to remove, perhaps among others: gnome-session-flashback, gnome-session, nautilus, gnome-terminal, gnome-control-center, gnome-panel, gnome-session-bin, metacity, gnome-power-manager, gnome-screensaver, unity-settings-daemon.
(What have I missed?)
Try, after installing MATE, copying and pasting to the terminalsudo apt-get purge gnome-session-flashback gnome-session nautilus gnome-terminal gnome-control-center gnome-panel gnome-session-bin metacity gnome-power-manager gnome-screensaver unity-settings-daemon
and see what it asks to remove. It will ask to have the Trisquel metapackages removed but if I remember correctly none of the preinstalled packages are set to auto (somebody please verify) so it should be safe to remove the metapackages. Be careful if it asks to remove anything else, though.
gnome-session-flashback isn't a real package in Trisquel like it is in Ubuntu; the actual package is trisquel-session.
Is MATE really available in Trisquel 7? I see the mate-desktop package, but the description of the package suggests it only provides some minor facilities, like an About window. Some things I don't see:
- Caja (MATE's file manager)
- Pluma (MATE's text editor)
- Atril (MATE's PDF viewer)
- Engrampa (MATE's archive manager)
- MATE Terminal
- Marco (MATE's window manager)
- Mozo (MATE's menu editor)
In fact, all I see in Trisquel 7's repo related to MATE seem to be things like icon themes and backgrounds, which I suppose could be used with another GTK+ DE like Xfce or GNOME Flashback, but are otherwise useless on their own.
no
i will use this to install it
https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/installing-mate
The method for Trisquel 6 is wrong (it should be exactly like for Belenos but with "trusty" replaced with "precise").
Edit: OK, I'll edit that one myself.
