Need advice about wireless
My laptop's wireless chip is incompatible with Trisquel. I have to use an Ethernet cable to connect to the internet, which can be a problem when I have to travel. I used to run Windows 7 on this machine. Is it possible to physically replace my laptop's wireless chip with a chip that is compatible with Trisquel?
I know that ThinkPenguin and other stores sell wireless USB adapters, but I don't want to use them.

The best temporary solution is to have a USB adapter and look for a
MiniPCI that is accepted by your hardware and has libre firmware:
https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/mini-pci-mini-pci-e-mini-pci-e-half-height-guide-laptop-wifi-cards
ThinkPenguin does have those too. But sometimes the BIOS does not accept
that hardware. You have to check on-site.
How would i fined out if my wireless chipset is compatable before I install trisquel 6.0?
If you have access to the machine, try in the LiveCD first.
OK, that's great. So anything that's NOT compatible will show up when I run it on the live CD?
It will simply not work on the Live CD. That said, a newer kernel may make it work. You can tell us the output of 'lspci' (from the Live CD if you wish) and we may inform you whether an update would be useful.
The USB thingie gives you the best control money can buy. It's as good as Ethernet. Because you know what? When you want it off, it's off. No more trouble if the soft keys are recognised by the system. No more trouble what if the hardware button actually works. Do you want to save power? Pull if off. Trouble with the standby? Pull it off, than plug it in.
I need to buy a USB wireless card, ideally that is just plug in and it works. What would people recommend?
I have a TP link TL-WN310G, and it very rarely works.
it has an AR2417 chipset (according to LSPCI)
If anyone knows how to make it work, that would be great.
I don't know if it's a hardware fault or a software fault.

Is the tp link 921N good? I need something cheaper than that.

Specifically USB.
http://h-node.org/wifi/catalogue/en/1/1/undef/undef/yes/USB/undef/undef
But some may not be specified as USB even if they have a USB interface
for the specified working chipset. So you might check all those that are
supported:

Remember that Thinkpenguin will donate part of the earnings to Trisquel.
Besides, you will tell the owners that supporting free drivers and
firmware is a good form. ;-)
I know this is off topic but I can not get my toshiba laptop to boot from the CD/DVD OR USB. I have been tring to trouble shoot the BIOS and what not, but so far I have been able to run it on my computer.
I have tried all sort of fixes, and I am just giving up for now....Very frustrating.
Usually the BIOS (maybe not efi) shows you some keys that you can press at start up. Usually one is for the BIOS settings and is called something like "setup", and one is for overriding the boot medium, and should be something like "boot menu."
Press the key for boot menu, and select your CD/DVD/USB.
I have accessed the boot menu and changed the sequence to boot from the CD/DVD rom but when i shutdown and restart it does not recognize the change and boots from the HD.
When I tried to update the BIOS I did manage to download a newer version but it was a windows EXE file. I tried to run it through wine 1.7 and through Q4wine and both times it said:
WDM. get support mode error!
THEN
bios did not support Insydeflash
Insyde IS the maker of my bios version 1.90,the one I downloaded is 2.4
So I am total at a lost where to turn next....
One way would be to physically swap the HDD to another computer for the install.
One way out with BIOS updates is to look for a DOS update. Than you stand a good chance with booting with one of the Free DOS flavors. You can even ask the maker of the board for help in using the DOS app.
I haven't done this in a while. Last time I did it there were both Windows and DOS apps available, with DOS being the safer and Win being the easier and more pretty
If you want it to always boot from the CD or DVD, then go into the BIOS setup and change the boot order so that the CD/DVD drive is first.
Hmmm, I will definately check out both those options.
Thanks for the advice.
Also, once you install it on the HDD, booting from the HDD will boot Trisquel by default, so unless you really want to boot live, there's no need to change the boot setup. Just boot to CD/DVD using the boot menu.
Ok, So I finally got the BIOS to save my boot sequence.
After running Trisq 6.0 from the LIVE CD. I see both my wireless and display settings don't seem to be compatibile.
Any suggestions on a fix for this.
What kind of hardware is it? Please open a terminal and input
lspci
What seems to be the trouble with the devices?
ps. How did you manage to persuade the bios to work?

As far as getting the Bios to work...I did two things and I am not sure which was the culprit.
I had installed "grub-customzier" & "boot-manager" which I uninstalled THEN did a re-boot into the Bios and changed the advanced settings (SATA AHCI Controller) to compatibale. I saved and exited and BAM it booted from the CD.
regarding your wireless... doesn't look good.

One thing you could try is installing a newer Linux-libre kernel, e.g. from http://jxself.org/linux-libre/
And should it still not work, Thinkpenguin sells you wifi dongles and cards that are guaranteed to work. There's a banner on the right hand column. -->
You didn't say what the trouble with the display is.
I had the same problem gnewsense.
For now I think I am going to stick with ubuntu and when I'm due for a new computer get something that is HARDWARE compatible as well as a truely Free OS.
Thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it.
Nevertheless, you can still use Trisquel and when you need to connect to Internet use another option.
