In addition to ThinkPenguin sponsoring the party I've volunteered to organize the FSF 30th Ohio B'day party. One of the things I need for the party is a playlist of songs. What would people suggest? I'm probably the worst person to come up with a playlist given I don't listen to music. Period (I know it's shocking- but there is 1 person on this planet who doesn't listen to music).

We'll certainly have to include these songs:

http://infinite-hands.draketo.de/musik/Infinite-Hands--free-software.ogg

http://www.gnu.org/music/free-software-song.en.html

But what else would people like to hear at the party? I think songs dealing with software freedom, liberty, hacking, and the likes are probably ideal candidates.

Maybe you could try streaming from https://libre.fm. A lot of the songs there are CC-BY-SA. I sometimes check the box "Only play me songs that other people love".

You think this music would be good for a party? I've really got utterly no idea about music.

I'm not sure if any of the OpenBSD songs are particularly inappropriate (either for a party, or political messages within, certainly don't want to promote BSD's message at the 30th party for FSF) here or would be good/acceptable :

http://www.openbsd.org/lyrics.html

If anybody wants to listen to those an give me an opinion and/or suggestions about which songs might be good I'd much appreciate it. I got about 30 seconds in and couldn't take it any longer (not because the music is bad necessarily- I just don't do music).

I guess that depends on what kind of party it is. If it's for dancing then you might not want the genres to change randomly, which they do on libre.fm, but you can also download the songs from there directly and then only choose those that you think are appropriate.

Playing OpenBSD songs sounds like a good idea. I like this one:
http://www.openbsd.org/lyrics.html#56

Considering the FFC issue, 4.6: "Planet of the Users" (http://www.openbsd.org/songs/song46.ogg) has interesting lyrics:

Way back in my time
Open source kept
everyone choosing
People knew the insides
Of devices they were using

Hackers had a doorway
Now it's locked and
dumbed down so much
One button coma
Stop the future truly outta touch

It's only a bit sad that they use the term "open source".

Yea- what's the license, maybe I can edit it an insert "free software" instead.

Hmm, what license would a BSD distro choose? ;)

If only RMS's speeches hadn't been no derivatives you could have pasted in "free software" from there.

If you decide to play this OpenBSD song (http://www.openbsd.org/lyrics.html#43) at a FSF event I would say you are a very, well, brave man. ;-)

I was thinking that too!

But the FSF has given BSD developers the Free Software Award and even LibrePlanet t-shirts included the mascots of various BSD icons. The icons on the shirts were developed by Matt Lee while working for the Free Software Foundation.

And if we boil it down RMS *absolutely hates the penguin* too. I never saw the penguin as being hostile to freedom though, but I understand where he is coming from. Looking at the historic context of the "open source" movement and those involved in the mainline kernel. It's a practical matter for them and that distracts from the goals of the Free Software movement. One of the things that I've found difficult to accept is that people will say "RMS just wants credit" when it's not a matter of credit, but awareness for a particular cause, that distribution(s) be referred to as GNU/Linux. It's being turned into an issue of credit when it is not credit that is the problem- but one of political positions. One ('open source') advocates for source for practical reasons and accepts non-free software. The other ('free software') advocates for freedom above all else and practicality is not an excuse. More or less. I don't really see the Free Software world doing everything correctly. Certainly we all had computers with a non-free BIOS until recently. I don't think these misdeeds are good, but it doesn't help to fret about stuff not within our control. It's better to work toward solving these types of problems.

Perhaps also this remix to appease the metalheads http://www.jonobacon.org/2011/06/15/metal-free-software-song-2-this-time-its-personal/

Besides that there is some nice stuff on https://www.jamendo.com/ (all kind of cc licenses)

NO!!!!!

We don't like Jon O'Bacon here. He's criticized the free software community and called us pathetic.

You are right, Chris, it is shocking.. But it is certainly better than listening to hip-pop or such x_X

This looks like a job for me! Here are some artists (and songs) that I particularly enjoy:

- Ant_DK - New Galactic (https://www.jamendo.com/en/track/1248378/new-galactic).
- Cate - Sexy Nights (https://www.jamendo.com/en/track/1252165/sexy-nights).
- CyberSDF - Feel the Beats (https://www.jamendo.com/en/list/a146312/feel-the-beats , album).
- DJ John - Everything Again (https://www.jamendo.com/en/list/a69252/everything-again-2010 , album). I am *especially* fond of the track Come Back from that album (https://www.jamendo.com/en/track/599382/dj-john-come-back).
- E.L. Mahon - E. L. Mahon (https://www.jamendo.com/en/list/a60121/e.l.-mahon , album). Yes, that's really the title.
- HEARTSKIN - Ocean (https://www.jamendo.com/en/track/1234936/heartskin-ocean).
- HEARTSKIN X CVPELLV - Falling in Love (https://www.jamendo.com/en/track/1248552/heartskin-x-cvpellv-falling-in-love).
- Basically *anything* by Hasenchat (https://www.jamendo.com/en/artist/386200/hasenchat).
- Hojimurod Bekchanov - Armon (https://www.jamendo.com/en/track/1250580/hojimurod-bekchanov-armon).
- Iltarusko - Heat of Time (https://www.jamendo.com/en/list/a149382/heat-of-time , album).

All of the music here is free culture, according to http://freedomdefined.org/Definition.

I'm not sure what kind of music you're after, but I can certainly recommend more - consider this a beginning, not an end. Let me know if anything here tickles your fancy, and I can suggest more like it.

I'm not going to the Ohio fest, but thanks for the suggested playlist;
think I'll download these and put them into my little rockboxed
player. Some of these tracks might be good to accompany my walks or
entertain me while I do housework. LOL.

Cheers,

Dave

It really depends on what is the purpose for the music. I'm not that

That's everything I have to offer for now. I still have lots of songs to
listen again in order to judge whether I still like them or not.

Respectfully, Adonay.
Have a nice day.

Hi Chris - Blank white CDs w/sleeves cost a few cents each, and you can print & burn them in-house. The New Orleans 2005 Red Hat Summit CD is a good example. :)

Sure, the least expensive and easiest is to just find and play tunes, but taking time to create and give away audio-video CDs at any event can generate good buzz and promote for years.

Hope you enjoy the FSF 30th Birthday Party!
