New To Trisquel
Hi Folks,
I'm new to Trisquel but have been using Linux for about 5 years with Ubuntu/Ubuntu-based distros the most. I have read quite a bit about the FSF and understand the idea behind Trisquel and am finding it more and more cool! I do have a couple questions...
I downloaded the newest Gnome version and was wondering if it is possible to use the standard Gnome 3.X desktop environment. I tried looking through the forum but couldn't find any previous posts asking.

Yea, just install the gnome-shell package. (sudo apt-get install gnome-shell)

Maybe another question or two related to the first...
I like the regular Gnome Shell as I utilize a fair amount of the extensions from the extensions.gnome.org site. If I install the gnome-shell package will it be 3.14 or 3.16 and will I be able to add extensions as I would in say Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 and administer them in the Tweak Tool?
I'm kind of liking the standard non-shell desktop and see I can add to the panel. I can't seem to find a way to re-order the added items/extensions I put on without deleting all of them and re-adding them. Is there a way to move the panel items once they are added?

Yes, you will be able to use or extensions. You'll need to install the gnome-tweak-tool package to do so. (sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool)
And sorry, I'm not sure about your second question. I haven't used the Trisquel gnome-classic shell in quite a while.

I see in Synaptic that the gnome-shell is 3.10 and I would like to grab 3.14 or 3.16 which I think is a s easy as adding the PPA's but would like to verify that before I go down a road of screwing things up and make sure I add the correct PPA's...LOL!
The second question regarding the gnome classic shell is that I can right click on the panel and add an item like the workspace switcher but it defaults to the right side of the panel and I would like to move it to the left side closer to the Trisquel Menu icon. I haven't used the classic shell ever so I'm on a learning curve with it. It may be easier to create a whole new panel but in the end I'm going to try a switch to the Gnome Shell and see how it goes.
With the above said, is there a short tutorial somewhere to follow to get the newer Gnome Shell installed?

To use GNOME 3.12 on Trisquel, you'll need to add the GNOME 3 staging PPA (sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3-staging), update your apt-cache (sudo apt-get update) and then, finally, install GNOME 3. (sudo apt-get install gnome-shell)
You can't run 3.14 or 3.16 on Trisquel because it has a version of glib incompatible with them-- sorry! :c
If you *really* want to run 3.16, though, you could install Parabola GNU/Linux, but only if you feel confident in your GNU/Linux skills. (I'd be glad to help you install Parabola, if need be.)
And I really haven't touched Trisquel's gnome-classic in quite a while. I don't think I ever figured out how to move items myself. I always screwed up customizing it, sorry. :p
I took a look at Parabola and that's not a direction I want to go. With Trisquel's Ubuntu base it gives me an OS that I'm familiar with and stays on the higher end of the reliability scale.
I'm guessing that 3.14+ may be compatible with a future Trisquel release. 3.12 is cool for me as I'm putting it on my wife's laptop which she is currently running Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 which I think has Gnome 3.10 so it will be kind of an upgrade for her. Just kind of sick of Ubuntu at this point for a couple reasons hence the switch. She isn't really pleased with the forum or AskUbuntu when she needs help and the Trisquel forum seems much better.
I'm currently running the new Zorin 10 Core but am going to switch to Trisquel after I get her machine sorted.
Lastly, I found some other posts on this forum regarding the switch to the Gnome Shell. Some of the postings speak of installing gnome-sessions and a unity package but those were older posts. Will there be any other packages need for my needs?

Ah, yes. My memory beseeches me. You will need the gnome-session package as well-- and if you want the 'full' GNOME experience, you can also install the gdm package and use that over lightdm. (GDM is GNOME's desktop manager-- it handles logging in to your PC, etc.)
Latest GNOME? Not a chance.
The newest one you can run in Trisquel 7 (3.12) is not a bad relase at all, though.
Neither was the default one available with it (3.10). OK quite a few themes won't work, but still....
The second question regarding the gnome classic shell is that I can right click on the panel and add an itemRight click on the item or panel you want to edit (or add somthing to) while pressing ALT.

Well....I think I did something wrong. The Gnome Shell DE did not show up, I did not have an option for it at login, my mouse pointer disappeared and the little I used the fresh install it was slow as all heck.
Here is what I did:
1. Did a fresh install with only Trisquel installed. No duel boot but I did mark the install for LVM and Full Disk Encryption.
2. Ran the Software Update app and let all available updates download and install which was error free and did the reboot.
3. I added the Gnome 3 Staging PPA via Terminal and ran the update. Then, via Terminal, installed gnome-shell, gnome-session and GDM each separately. During the GDM install I was asked what to use as the default and I chose GDM.
4. After the installs of step 3 the Software Update threw another batch of updates at me so again I downloaded and installed and did a reboot.
5. Disk encryption asked me for my pw and I was brought to the login screen. There was no option for picking a DE but all else seemed normal.
6. Logged in and the screen flashed 3 or 4 times and I was brought to the Gnome Classic DE and was missing my mouse pointer but when moving the mouse I saw the Trisquel Menu icon highlight and was able to click on it to open the menu. At this point I logged out and did a full re-install of Ubuntu Gnome 15.04 and all was well.
I looked over the steps above in previous posts and think I got them all correct but maybe I missed something. I would like to try a new install and get Gnome Shell 3.12 DE working but I will wait until I get feedback from this post.

I think that you'll need to run (sudo apt-get dist-upgrade) after adding the PPA and installing the gnome-shell, gnome-session, and gdm packages.
