New user (newbie) presentation and some doubts on the Esperanto version of trisquel and keyboards
Hello, users!
Since a long time, I've been interested in Free Software, but have always remained a newbie, even if I already went to 2 encounters (FISL in Brazil). I've already had some short experiences with other OS (Fedora, Ubuntu, and I think Debian also). Now, I've been almost 1 year on Trisquel and it is very very wonderful. I've seen Trisquel 8 as well and it is wonderful also. I must say that I know nothing of programming (I hope that someday I might learn it) and that I am not clever at computing. But I want to learn more about these issues. I just need to organize better in order to study them.
I however had some little problems with installing for instance the Esperanto version of Trisquel 7 (the keyboard didn't work as that one of Brazilian Portuguese and I did not succeed to type words in Portuguese). Afterwards, I succeeded to install Trisquel 7 in Brazilian Portuguese and use special keyboard shortcuts. But I reinstalled Trisquel 7 and now I cannot type one letter of Esperanto alphabet. However, it is ok, because I can use other methods.
I installed yesterday Trisquel 8, which I found in a link in a topic in this forum, it is quite nice and great, however I did not succeed again to install the Esperanto version of it (same keyboard problem) and it was interesting that I did not succeed to deactivate the screen reader. Even in the Brazilian Portuguese version there was this problem. The program Orca was not open.
Then I came back to Trisquel 7.
But all this is just a mere detail in the greatness that is the experience of using a 100% free OS.
I have a lot more to improve. I need yet to migrate to fully free social networks and email providers. And I intend to do so at least during this year.
I hope I may participate more in the forum and learn more about free software and programming.
Perhaps, this is because Trisquel does not run well in my computer, it is from a Brazilian brand called Positivo.
Your Thankfulness and it is really very nice to begin more effectively to participate in the free software movement.
Oi! Welcome here!
Trisquel 7 runs great on my Positivo Sim+. The "Input Sources" tab of "Region & Language" in the "System Settings" manages the keyboard layouts. The "+" button in the bottom-left corner allows to add an additional layout. You can order the layouts (the first one is the default) using the two arrow buttons. Finally, notice the keyboard shortcuts to "switch to previous source" (Shift+Super+Space by default) and to "switch to next source" (Super+Space by default). Super is also known as the "Windows key"...
With GNOME Shell, that I use, there also is an indicator of the layout in use on the top bar. Clicking on it allows to switch the "source" (i.e., the layout) and to display the current layout. That indicator is (was?) not shown on Trisquel 7's default desktop but Mampir gave a solution, which is not perfect: https://trisquel.info/forum/trisquel-7-keyboard-indicator#comment-55540
As for the screen reader, it is automatically launched when you wait quite a long time after the live system started. It is a feature: it allows blind users to use/install Trisquel without any external help. Anyway, the screen reader can be deactivated from the "Seeing" tab of "Universal Access" in the "System Settings".
Oi! Thank you!
Mine is Positivo Stilo DS3558. But I'll try to see if I can somehow follow your instructions!
I'll check Mampir's solution, thank your for your help.
About the screen reader, it is quite important to take care of accessibility in order to include people with functional diversity. I succeeded to deactivate it after installation on Trisquel 7 but not on Trisquel 8 (maybe because it may be not quite ready yet).
See you!
Welcome to the forum! With the time, you will notice that not everyone here uses Trisquel, for example I use Parabola (pitifully, I cannot recommend it to you, because you need experience to use it) but some others use Debian, Devuan, etc.
About your issue, try running
setxkbmap CODENAME
replace CODENAME with the Esperanto keyboard codename, which I don not know. If there is an Esperanto website, maybe the suffix could be, for example a Spanish (Spain) website ends with .es like example.es
>and that I am not clever at computing
You are wrong. You use GNU and you use it libre, hence it seems to me that you are indeed VERY clever at computing.
>libre social networks
There are many. I invite you to try Diaspora*, it's very funny, entertaining and informative. A lot of free software lovers there. I'm gargamello there, I post a lot of cats for da h00manz to remind them who owns the world :)
welcome!
There is also GNUSocial, you can follow me name at domain
P.S.: why did you answered me, SuperTramp? :P ;)
Thank you for informing about GNUsocial, I will do this social network as well. Maybe within a few days!
See you!
And I'll ad you, for sure!
>P.S.: why did you answered me, SuperTramp? :P ;)
Ohh.. no particular reason other than advanced senility, as usual.. :)
Hi, thank you for the praise!
I already use Diaspora, but as a beginner (I've created it yesterday or the day before yesterday). I use 3 accounts (one in which I post in English, the other in which I post in Portuguese, the other in which I post in Esperanto).
I'll add you!
Thank you for the welcome!
See you!
Thank you, and thank you for the hint!
About many OS, it is wonderful, diversity. And people working together.
See you!
