I cannot see the Off The Record plugin listed for Pidgin. Many other plugins are listed, though. Why isn't it there?

Do we have to manually download and install it ourselves?

Thank you, aloniv! I will know to check out that url in future for other Trisquel packages. :)

I received this error message when installing it:

Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libotr2 (>= 3.2.0)

Does that mean there is no Trisquel libotr2 sufficiently new yet?

The package listed on http://packages.trisquel.info are exactly those available in the repositories of Trisquel. You should install them with the package management system.

Which Trisquel version are you using? the link I provided is for version 5.5. You can find on this website older versions of pidgin-otr too. If you are using 5.5 just download the missing library from this website (libotr2).

I am using Trisquel 5.5 :)

I downloaded the pidgin-otr .deb file from that webpage. I double clicked on it. It gave me a warning:

A later version is available in a software channel

You are strongly advised to install the version from the software channel, since it is usually better supported.

So I went to the command line and tried:

sudo apt-get install pidgin-otr

But yet again I failed to connect to the archive. I have tried all the mirrors now.

If I install this older file from the webpage, will I get automatic update notifications for it when they become available? Or does that only happen when you install something from the channel?

Thank you!

After reading a few of your posts your main issue seems to be with your internet/proxy connection. The packages are in the repository.

Why did you download the package? There is a link on the right side of the page that says "install using apturl". You can click that and the package will install. I mean you can download it and install it but it seems easier to me to just click it.

You will get updates if you install an older version yes. Anyway the newest version is in brigantia-updates which explains the "later version is available" message:
