Noob Issues..be gentle
Hello All.
I am a middle aged Noob. I installed Trisqul Mini on 2 older laptops I had that previously had Windows XP on. The first is a DELL E1705, and the 2nd is an ASUS EEPC 1005HAB.
I have played around in the past with DesktopBSD, and FreeBSD, however I had trouble installing either of those onto my laptops. So through some research I discovered Trisquel LIve and I was quite pleased with how well my laptops responded to it. So I made the plunge and installed Trisuel Mini on both systems. I decided to go with the MINI since these are older systems and I didnt want to tax my hardware to much. FOr the most part I am pleased with the Mini's performance. I have learned a little here and there when I have time, but I mostly use each system for web browsing. I have also installed Google Chrome so I can watch Netflix while I am away from home.
TO date I have a few issue that I have been trying to resolve and am having no luck. The first is that if I am watching a video from youtube my screen will black out. I have found instructions online about how to go about changing a conf file (etc/kbd/config) to Blank Time = 0, but everytime I try it will not allow me to save the file. I have read that it is because I am not logged in as ROOT, however there is no option for me to log in as ROOT.
I have a similar issue while using PHOTOREC. I used this program to recover lost pictures from my previous XP system and it worked quite well. However if I try to delete unwanted pictures the system will not allow me to delete anything...unless I am the ROOT user.
Finally, while browsing I noticed the system slows down and at times becomes unresponsive. I thought maybe it was because the Software Updater was looking for the latest updates. So I looked at the settings and saw that it was set to check for updates daily. If I try to change the settings, they do not hold at all. I am unable to change them at all...just look at them.
I feel very restricted in making any kind of changes to my system since installing Trisqul. I am sure these are all NOOB issues that I still need to learn, however I have yet to learn it. And really...I just want my screensaver to stay off while watching netflix, or for my laptop to not hang while browsing. I am not looking to do much other than that.

Hi there and welcome! That file etc/kbd/config is for blanking the virtual consoles. (Eg. hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go to VT1 and Alt+Left arrow to get back) I don't know how to inhibit the screensaver. Trisquel uses sudo instead of a separate root account. If you use an editor on the command line like nano then invoke it withsudo nano If you use a graphical editor like leafpad then invoke it with gksudo leafpad
Are you the owner of the files? Use the chown command. Read the manual page to find out how.man chown
All in all Trisquel mini is much less polished than Trisquel. It might be worth trying to see how that works on your hardware.
Chrome is bad and Netflix is bad.
Chrome (non-free) and Netflix (non-free, DRMs, centralization of the Net, nasty influence on the HTML standard, etc.) are indeed bad.
You can use Iridium instead of Chrome (same base): https://iridiumbrowser.de
You can use P2P file sharing networks to get movies.
The screen lock can be inhibited from "Brightness & Lock" in the "System settings"... of Trisquel GNOME edition. I have no idea how to do that in Trisquel Mini.
To know about the permissions you have on a file, you can right click on it and see its "Properties". If you have write permissions on the file, you can change those permissions to (what lembas suggested you to do with 'chmod' in a terminal).
If you do not have write permissions on the file, then you really need to run something with administrative privileges. Using 'sudo' if you run a command in the terminal; 'gksu' if you run a graphical application. For instance, to get a PCMan file manager (Trisquel's mini default) where you are allowed to do anything (including removing system files!):
$ gksu pcmanfm
At least, I believe the command is 'pcmanfm'. If the terminal replies "Command not found", try 'gksu pcman'.

Popcorntime still works but you won't get the pretty thumbnails but just click on the torrent search icon, insert the movie title and choose one of the torrents.
Kodi with the addon Genesis works pretty fine too, you may have to click on 2 or 3 or 4 sources before finding a decent stream but it works and it works just fine.
