OT: How To Configure Router for SIP Phone?
Hi, Trisquellers!
In the interest of going totally free (software app wise), I'm trying
SIP clients, instead of Skype, for voice chatting. I have Ekiga and
LinPhone installed. When using the echo test server on Ekiga, I hear
the greeting, but not myself. After 30 to 45 seconds, the call is
dropped, with a message about the remote end seeming to have dropped the
call. If I call, or get called by, a friend, the conversation seems to
work, but gets dropped within a minute. If, instead of my home network,
I use a public wifi spot, I can make SIP calls with no trouble, and
little latency.
an anyone suggest router setup that may allow me to make SIP audio/video
calls on my home network?
Thanks,
Dave
Have you routed the specific router's ports? See here
http://wiki.ekiga.org/index.php/Enable_port_forwarding_manually
(it's possible the URL is cut)
Please, tell us your results. Remember to reboot your router after changing the port forwarding, if necessary.
Maybe your router can assign the public IP to your computer. It was necessary for me once, but maybe it has security issues, so better turn it off when you stop using ekiga.
Thanks!
I made another sip account on iptel.org, where I do not seem to need
forwarding. So far, I've used only its echo test account. Instead of
ekiga client, I'm using linphone.
Cheers,
Dave Hunt

When last I said this was working at home, that was premature. The
router was still dropping calls after about a minute, and the echo
server at ekiga.net was not sending my packets back, though the one at
iptel.org was. I double-checked the port triggering/forwarding setup on
my router, no joy. When I set this machine as the 'dmz', the calls to
echo test do not get dropped. If this machine were always turned on,
I'd never do this.
Thanks,
Dave
