pdf unreadable after decrypting file with gpg

I have tried to decrypt a pdf file using gpg. Unfortunately, once it is decrypted and I try to open the PDF with Document Viewer I get the message: Impossible to open the document. This unknown file type (application/octet stream) is not supported (in my french version: "Le type de fichier inconnu (application/octet-stream) n'est pas pris en charge").
any ideas what could have gone wrong?

I suspect this is a digital restriction on the document. While the basic PDF format is documented there are some features which are not. It is a real neusense. Most of these that I have seen come from governmental agencies of some sort. You would need Adobe's non-free Reader to open it.
