Problem after latest update

I have been experiencing frequent, random freezes since the most recent Trisquel update. For example, the following happened in the last hour:
1. After unlocking my desktop, I had a blank screen. The cursor was present, and blinked and moved. But I could not get anything else to work. Ctl-alt-F1, etc. did nothing. I had to power off and restart.
2. The machine froze solid while i was browsing with abrowser. Again I had to power off to reboot.

This has never happened before.Trisquel is usually very stable.

My machine is a Thinkpad x200 with Libreboot.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Advice, not based on much experience:
(1) If you have an email client, make sure it isn't looking up the mother ship. Set the preferences so you alone can initiate such visits.
(2) Some of my freezes (on a Lenovo T420 running Etiona) coincided with a cron job; but not always.
(3) Be sure your Data drive is mounted; if you have OS's in more than one partition, make sure that the data partition is on the same physical HDD.
(4) Look up the process for editing your browser's settings; Abrowser has a very long such list.
(5) Don't browse while your CPU is doing something else.
(6) Does your router's WiFi antenna have an optimal position for best signal strength ?
(7) If you're using a WiFi dongle, try putting it in a different USB port.
(8) If you're using GRUB, start the OS in an earlier version of Trisquel.
(9) My own residual installation of Trisquel, Flidas, has more startup troubles than Etiona.

I also have problems with the latest kernel 4.15.0-151 in a Libreboot X200 machine.
The machine froze.

amenex apparently forgot that his freezes, one month ago, were due to defective RAM. Repeating what I wrote him in https://trisquel.info/forum/trisquel9-etiona-experiences-random-freeze-which-there-no-recovery#comment-158579 :

Random freezes are often due to faulty RAM. Have you tested your RAM? You can install "memtests86+" (in Trisquel's repository) and let it test you RAM during one full night. Memtest86+ is to be launched from the menu of GRUB, the bootloader, that lists the installed operating systems right after the computer switches on. You may have to press [Esc] to have GRUB's menu appear. If memtest86+'s blue screen turns red, your RAM is defective. Instead of installing memtest86+, you can test your RAM with any live ISO that includes memtest86+.

Alas, the freezes continued after I reinstalled the RAM in two identical 4GB pairs (one pair new) and one, sole 4G RAM.
All suitably tested with memtest86+ without errors. Now I avoid Internet searches and only check progress of my bash
scripts with System Monitor and File Manager. No more freezes so long as I behave myself and avoid rapid mouse cut &
pastes. The CPU's get very busy and hot at times (95 C).

Rapid mouse cuts freeze no system. It is not voodoo. For many processors, a temperature of 95°C should trigger an emergency shutdown. That emergency shutdown may not work, for some reason. A blanket of dust probably covers your processor, below its ventilator. You should remove it. Maybe the ventilator itself is malfunctioning.

Maybe such a high temperature has already damaged your processor. That may be the reason for the freezes.

EDIT: it is actually normal that your T420 does not shut down when the processor is at 95°C. Indeed, looking on https://ark.intel.com at the Tjunction values of the different processors a T420 can ship with, they all are 100°C.

Hello Magic Banana- another fault has arisen here. Abrowser partially froze; I was suddenly unable to change tabs. However, Abrowser was otherwise functional and other applications were working fine. Only Icedove and terminal were open. Network connectivity was unaffected.

Dmesg indicates that a reboot is needed:

Again: I would test the RAM.

Hi Magic Banana
I downloaded Memtest86+ and attempted to run it from the grub menu. It did not work. Could this be due to my encrypted disk? If so, how can I deal with this?
Thanks!

The launch of Memtest86+ fails? If your whole disk is encrypted, that is indeed probably the reason. Maybe somebody else here knows how to launch Memtest86+ in that context: I have personally never had my whole disk encrypted (only /home). Alternatively, you may test the RAM from a live ISO including Memtest86+, unlike Trisquel ISOs.

Memtester worked for me. Memory is good.

Thanks for the comments.

Gnu, I also suspect that the issue is somehow connected with the updated Kernel. In the past, YouTube sometimes crashed the bios (as indicated by a flashing Caps Lock light), but this has not happened in many months. An update must have corrected this issue.

Amenex, thank you for your thoughts. Here are my replies:

(1) If you have an email client, make sure it isn't looking up the mother ship. Set the preferences so you alone can initiate such visits.
I do have Icedove running and checking email regularly. But the crashes do not seem to coincide with email retrieval.
(2) Some of my freezes (on a Lenovo T420 running Etiona) coincided with a cron job; but not always.
Only default chron jobs are running, i.e., software update checker.
(3) Be sure your Data drive is mounted; if you have OS's in more than one partition, make sure that the data partition is on the same physical HDD. Trisquel is my only OS.
I have only one internal HDD.
(4) Look up the process for editing your browser's settings; Abrowser has a very long such list.
I really doubt the problem is Abrowser. The issues only arose after the latest update, which did not include Abrowser. My most recent Abrowser update caused no issues.
(5) Don't browse while your CPU is doing something else.
[?????]]
(6) Does your router's WiFi antenna have an optimal position for best signal strength ?
My router is only a few feet away.
(7) If you're using a WiFi dongle, try putting it in a different USB port.
No dongle; using Ath9k card in laptop. My Ath9k used to randomly disconnect due to an apparent bug, but this stopped happening after an update 6-8 weeks ago.
(8) If you're using GRUB, start the OS in an earlier version of Trisquel.
Not using GRUB.
(9) My own residual installation of Trisquel, Flidas, has more startup troubles than Etiona.
Luckily, Triquel has never given me any startup issues.

Thanks!

By the way, my machine has now been running for a few hours without crashing. We will see what happens next.

With a kernel downgrade (4.15.0-147-generic) I no longer have any problem.

Downgrading the kernel is risky, security-wise. Have you tried upgrading it instead? Installing the package "linux-image-generic-hwe-18.04" (in Trisquel's repository) and rebooting will give you a 5.3 kernel. For a 5.10 (LTS) kernel or even a 5.13 (non-LTS) kernel, you can follow the instructions on https://jxself.org/linux-libre/

What about running update-grub, rebooting, picking the first or second entry below the latest kernel,
and then running apt-get update once the reboot completes ? Doesn't that get the security updates ?

Another crash occurred while I was doing an Abrowser web search:

The system completely froze; I had to power off to reboot.

Below is the Kern.log at the time of the freeze.

A bug is noted in the first line. Then a few lines down there is an "Oops" which I think represents a general protection fault.
