Never do that. It is a great security risk. Think about the
probability that the program which you open changes your whole operating
system, including adding or removing programs, running scripts, etc.

It is better to check the command that the desktop environment runs
(with right-button edit) and try to run it on a terminal. The error
will show there, hopefully. Then you can solve the problem securely.
