Recent update has caused mouse and keyboard to stop working
I recently tried to update from Trisquel 7 (I realise it was probably quite out of date). Anyway I just rebooted the system and it now says Debian 8 on boot up. It allows me to select trisquel from the grub menu, however when it gets to the menu to choose which user will login both mouse and keyboard are unresponsive.
I tried to go back to the reboot and see if I can boot into safe mode - I select
"Advanced options for Debian/GNU linux"
It then asks for a username which I type in
It then asks for a password which I also type in
It then cycles back to the grub menu.
I'm a bit stuck because I have files on that computer which I'd like to retrieve. Any advice gratefully received.

From a live system, such as Trisquel 10's installation medium. You can backup the user files before launching the installer, where, choosing a "Something else" type of installation, you can reuse the existing partition for /home with*out* formatting it (so that the backup is a mere, although important, precaution).

My problem now is backing up the user files. I'm trying to copy across the files inside /home but they're all protected.
I tried using sudo, but none of my attempts had any success. Is there a simple way of doing this?
