Red Text Displayed When Logging into Trisquel 6.0 AMD64 Randomly
Hi,
I'm currently using Trisquel 6.0 AMD64 with Gnome and when I log in, on random ocasions I get a black screen with loads of red text(sometimes white) displayed instead of a desktop. I cannot describe it but only that it's very annoying.
I took pictures and I hope they help. Any aid with this issue would be Much appreciated as I love using Trisquel and I know it as being a very reliable OS.

Sorry that the pictures are terribly unclear. I don't have access to a good camera and also sorry that I don't have the jargon to explain the problem better :-( I Think it's a 'kernel panic'.

It says something about Metacity being "tainted". Metacity is the window manager Trisquel uses by default when no 3D acceleration is available (or when the user does not want effects). I am not sure what conclusion to draw from that. Random crashes frequently are associated with hardware failures...
The next time this happens, try to type Ctrl+Alt+F1. If it is not a "kernel panic", you will be presented a terminal in which you are invited to log in. From there you can execute this command:
$ dmesg > dmesg.log
In this way, you save in your home directory the messages you took pictures of. At the next reboot (type 'sudo reboot' and your password when it is asked), if you can get a graphical session, you will not have troubles to copy/paste those logs in this thread. They may help us understand the issue.

In relation to 'Metacity', I did change the 'Window Manager and Effects' in 'System Setting' from Compiz to Metacity because I thought it might help, but it has made no difference.
To my knowledge I don't believe any hardware is failing on my Acer Aspire 5536 but I do believe there is possibly a hardware compatibility issue with my ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics card but that's nothing new as the drivers are not open sourced, therefore I am using the default desktop environment: Gnome Fallback(Classic) and have had no issues with Trisquel 5.5 under the same hardware.
Anyway, thanks again and I will be back with the logs.

You will be back with the logs if it is not a kernel panic. If it is a kernel panic, you will not be able to switch to a terminal.

Sorry about the really long wait. It took me ages to get the dmesg.log but Finally I got them. I'm not that sure what's important to know here to I've posted it all, but the problem starts at "----cut here----" down towards the end of the log. Taking a look at line 3440 of mm/slub.c (in Linux's source), it looks like the problem arises when freeing a page in the main memory... although the function with the incorrect output is named "virt_to_head_page" and "virt" may mean "virtual memory" and relate to swapping. This part of the kernel source is quite abstract and I am not 100% sure about the failing device. However, if I were you, I would test my RAM with memtest86+ (to be installed from Trisquel's repository) and my hard drive with SMART, which is, by default, available in Trisquel from the "Disk Utility" (the name may of this utility may actually be different: I am here translating it from French).

An "opcode" is an operation code... it is a part of the "word" that arrives at the processor at each clock cicle -- that word usually has 32 or 64 bits. It's probably a bug in your kernel's CPU architecture implementation. Try to use Linux-libre 3.5 by installing "linux-generic-lts-belenos" from Trisquel repos; or use a more up-to-date version from http://jxself.org/linux-libre or https://launchpad.net/~linux-libre .
