Rhythmbox and Totem players asking for missing codecs.
Whenever I try to play a MP3 format file in Rhythmbox or VOB format file in Totem Player, I am presented with following message.
Search for suitable codec? The required software to play this file is not installed. You need to install suitable codecs to play media files. Do you want to search for a codec that supports the selected file? The search will also include software which is not officially supported.
Some Ubuntu user from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1239800 also had a similar issue.
Are these media codecs patent/copyright encumbered now?
Is there a way to play at least MP3 files?
Well, MP3 has always been patent encumbered. This is nothing new but what you are seeing has nothing to do with that.
Rather, it is only telling you a needed package is missing. If you allow it to do so it should then install the package.
Try:
sudo apt install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
Also make sure gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad is installed too.
[RESOLVED/FIXED]
I followed jxself's advice; But note that, essentially the package gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly, as suggested by SuperTramp83 is what the GUI installs for playing media.
Thank you so much....!!
