This is my desktop. There are two images so you can see that the desktop background is animated. This is XFCE4, but with changes that allow for the animation. I don't use it like this regularly because it's just a hack at this moment (wastes CPU and it's buggy), but thought some of you might find it cool.

I finally got my Libreboot MacBook Pro (dubbed LibreBook) up and running! The only issue I've got right now is the wifi likes to cut in and out for some reason (as you can see in the second pic).

1.
what wifi card are you using
2.
i noticed you blurred your terminal title
which i assume contained your computers network name

is this a security issue if others know what your computers name is?

According to lspci: Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR5418 Wireless Network Adapter [AR5008E 802.11(a)bgn] (PCI-Express) (rev 01)

It seems to work out of the box with free drivers, but not incredibly well.

And the second is force of habit. Call me paranoid but I usually blur any sort of identifying information when I take a screenshot.

" Call me paranoid but I usually blur any sort of identifying information when I take a screenshot."
that dose seem a good pratice

the reason why i don’t normally hide my identity
is as i have previously been on facebook, youtube etc
and identified myself by name with photo’s
and as i live with a iphone and "smart" tv

there doesn’t seem to be much point

wifi:
that card seems to work with libre drivers according to the debian wiki...

do you get this wifi problem when using other gnu/linux distros?

Yes I've been getting the same problem with Trisquel, Parabola, Debian, and Mint. Before I removed OSX and replaced it with Trisquel, the wifi card never gave me any problems. Granted I only used it long enough to download a Trisquel iso, and I may have looked up a recipe or two. This is also a second hand machine I got for free from a coworker who didn't want it any longer, so I'm wondering if the wireless card could be failing. I've never attempted to replace any components in a MacBook (this is the first I've owned) so I'm not sure how easy it will be.

I've tried using my ThinkPenguin usb wifi adapter as well and the signal doesn't cut out when I'm using it, only the internal card. Wired ethernet never loses signal either.

Other than the wireless problem I'm loving LibreBoot with Trisquel. My machine somehow feels "cleaner" if that makes sense.

You can try to update your kernel: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/update-linux-libre-kernel

Wow duh, I didn't even think about doing that! I'll give that a shot when I get home and see if it fixes the issue.

I'd love to get it working well because it's the only machine I have that's running a free BIOS. I'd love a libreboot x200 but just can't afford to spend the money on one.

That didn't seem to work unfortunately. I'll give replacing the card a shot and see if that does the trick. If not I'll have to either live with an external wireless card or use it as a server or something.

I had this one: https://github.com/KittyKatt/screenFetch

But it didn't make the Trisquel logo, just Tux ):

Thanks for the heads up!

No problem! The older version gave me a Tux also, but you can modify what distribution's logo is displayed using -D 'distro of choice' or something similar when running the program.

My desktop along with a text file with the contents of the .conkyrc file. The conky is an edited version of Conky Vision from gnome-look.org. http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Conky-Vision?content=160448

Nice Techbuddy!
I like conky very much. It is a very useful thing to have on the background. I will include mine. If you have a quadcore you can easily add the other two cores by editing the file (I have a dual core).

I also played with this nice style. I noticed that it's missing the low temp for the first day. If you want to add it the line is e.g. (adjust the position as needed)

${voffset 22}${goto 90}${execi 300 grep "yweather:forecast" ~/.cache/weather.xml | grep -o "low=\"[^\"]*\"" | grep -o "\"[^\"]*\"" | grep -o "[^\"]*" | awk 'NR==1'}°\

Also, I noticed that using the forecast was much more realistic for today than using the latest measurement which seemed several hours ago. I.e. replace the word 'condition' in the first high temp line with 'forecast'. That is probably true if you live anywhere Yahoo weather deems unimportant and faraway. :)

Thanks for bringing this up.

How did you manage to make the panel translucent?

compiz plugins.... for panel, start menu, and right click context menus...add 3 new entries into the opacify plugin.

(class=Gnome-panel) & !(type=Menu | PopupMenu | Dialog | DropdownMenu)

class=Gnome-panel

Tooltip|Menu|PopupMenu|DropdownMenu

install gtk-theme-config to change the colors on them.

I was gonna link you this...https://trisquel.info/en/forum/desktop-freezes-when-trying-use-compiz-trisquel-7 but ur th eone that posted the fix lol. ty.

Alt + right click on the panel + Properties

In Trisquel 7 you don't have to hold alt anymore, but it doesn't matter transparency setting is bugged.

You till have to alt right click to move things around the panel though, and for future reference when running compiz, its super alt rightclick.

I still have to hold alt- and my system is fully up-to-date. My transparency
setting isn't bugged either.

well thats pretty strange i've never had to hit alt except to move the icons in panel, and only hear people on trisquel 6 having to do that for properties.

Its bugged for me if you actually try to adjust the transparency, and the whole reason i installed compiz in the first place to help a user on irc make his panel transparent. I assume thats why a_slacker asked me how I did it.

Did you install 7 fresh? added extra libraries? What video card/drivers you using maybe? mysterious.

A fresh install? I've had it for a few months- not sure if that qualifies.
I'm using the normal Trisquel DE. Strangely, I always have to hit alt to modify
the panels. And yes, I'm using Intel integrated graphics (Intel Sandybridge
Mobile, to be exact). Though I don't see what bearing that should have.

By Fresh i mean did you upgrade from trisquel 6 or install 7 fresh.

you/re telling me you have to hold alt and right click in Trisquel 7 in order to get the panel properties?

and I Dunno, but I use nouveau drivers, and So you go to the panel properties, select background, select solid color, adjust the transparency and it doesn't looked bugged to you? interesting...

can you post a screenshot like everybody else?

that looks bugged to me man, it doesn't look transparent, it looks blank, and its supposed to be the whole panel. Its messed up, thats why I used compiz.

moxalt

I thought that what you meant by it being bugged was the panel glitching out or
going white or something. I don't consider what I just posted as bugged- the
panel itself (that is, not the items on it) adjusts its transparency/opacity
level perfectly according to the slider. The panel in that picture clearly
isn't blanked- it has 100% transparency and 0% opacity. The panel is exactly
the same as the background in that area- if that's not transparency, I don't
know what is. Look in between the indicator applet and the window switcher, and
between the menus and the window switcher. That is the panel, and it is
perfectly transparent. I rest my case.

As for the panel items (apart from the applications menu) it seems they've just
been shittily coded and don't want to cooperate with the transparency setting.
That's the panel items' problem, not the panel's. The applications menu, for
example, seems to take its background transparency setting from that of the
rest of the panel. The unified indicator applet, however, seems to take it from
the system theme (and the window switcher's just weird). The point is, the
transparency of the panel itself is not bugged.

ok well, to get the whole panel transparent, I use compiz. Unless you know of another way?

moxalt

So you spend all this time trying to convince me my panel's transparency
setting is bugged, and then just back off with an 'ok well' when I prove it
isn't.

I have no idea of any other way (other than using Compiz) to force the panel
items to take their background setting from the panel transparency setting. I
never really understood the appeal of a transparent panel anyway. Or Compiz,
for that matter. My experiences with it have had me find it ugly, bloated, and
unnecessary for a decent-looking desktop.

cooloutac

well if I can't convince you thats bugged what else can I say? Compiz fixes the issue for me is all I can say...

THe guy who got me started with this on the IRC help channel believed transparency would help limit the screen burning on his monitor, i guess he has a black desktop background, or maybe worried the whole panel wasn't transparent not sure. I dunno if his worries are valid but i was determined to get it working. He said it was not an issue for him on trisquel 6 I think.

I just think it looks cool, i'm also using compiz to make the start menu and context menus transparent. and using the trailfocus plugin for transparent windows, snapping windows and some other things. I don't find it bloated since I don't notice a change in memory, and compiz is only using about 3-6% cpu depending, cpu running cool still.

what? maybe you're confusing stories? secondhand spy information? lmao.

I live in nyc, not bumbafuck nowhere-ville, people go around cracking random wifi's all the time. I suggest you use all the security that is available on your router with a decent passwd.
